People often get confused differentiating between sadness and clinical depression. While sorrow is common to all, depression is not. There are times when people may experience grief due to the loss of a loved one or a break-up of a long-term relationship; the cause of sadness can vary.   • To get over the grief, one must find closure, without which it is hard to move on.
  • One must understand that the process of overcoming grief varies from person to person. Grief is something personal; therefore, it is never going to follow a formula. Some people can express sadness by crying and verbally talking about it to close friends and family, while others may suppress the same, struggling with the emotions for a long time.

Seek Help

Once you have accepted that you are in pain, the next step is finding a solution to the problem. The goal should be to get over the pain and, in the process, learn more about one’s own self. It is always a good idea to talk to your friends and family about how you feel about the loss you’ve endured. If the cause of the pain is something tangible, like the passing away of a loved one, it is easier to have more people share the pain with you. But there are times when you don’t have a name for the sadness you experience. For example, many women suffer from peripartum depression during pregnancy or right after delivery. Not everyone can comprehend the reason for the overwhelming sadness right after childbirth. For complicated issues, seek the help of a professional who can untangle one’s thought process to get the root cause.

  •  There should be no shame in seeking psychological help from a clinical psychiatrist / mental health specialist. The professional experts can diagnose the cause of the problem faster and offer helpful solutions to get over the pain.
  • Many a time, one requires medication in order to get rid of depression. Only a certified psychiatrist can prescribe patients with medication. Therefore, it is time to end the stigma around mental health to lead a physically and mentally fit life.
