Home or Away? How to Make the Most of Your Weekend

Everybody needs a little time away to rest their minds and bodies, unplug from the fast pace of modern life and just have a little fun with family and friends. But getting time off from work to take a proper vacation might not be in the cards for you right now. If that’s the case, then here are three little ideas you can try to squeeze in a little rest and relaxation for a weekend.

Plan a Special Weekend at Home

If heading out of town for a whole weekend isn’t an option for financial reasons, then you can still have a wonderful, relaxing weekend at home. Plan a special weekend with your significant other. Cook up a special meal together—perhaps one that either of you have never prepared or even tasted before. Being a little adventurous in the kitchen never hurt anyone—but have your favorite pizza place on speed dial, just in case it doesn’t work out so no one goes hungry.

Make sure you unplug and commit to your plans away from it all. If you go about normal life while trying to have time to yourself, it will end up being just as stressful as any other day.

Take a Day Trip

If you have a little more money in the budget but are still short on time, you could just take a short road trip or hit some tourist activities nearby. Grab one of those tourist guides from a local motel or one of the news racks on the corner and flip through it to see what fun activities are out there in driving distance.

You and a friend or loved one might be just an hour or two away from some outdoor fun. Parasailing, ATV tours, hiking trails, Jet Ski lessons, zip lining and helicopter rides might be in your immediate future! Try seeing your area through fresh, new eyes. If you’re sincerely looking for fun, you could end up finding something special.

Plan a Weekend Away

If you live in a crowded city, then getting away from the traffic, the noise and the crowds will do you a lot of good. Why not hop on a plane or into the car and head out to another state? But don’t stop there. Don’t just head to another crowded city for the weekend.

Instead, enjoy a quick stay at a cozy little inn or other lodging to get away from the hustle and bustle of city living. Breathe in some fresh air. Take a walk out in the forest or along a river or stream. Go sit in a boat on the lake for a few hours and let the gentle waves rock you to sweet relaxation. Whatever your weekend away ends up being, make sure it feels like a vacation—not an extension of everyday life.

You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to have a little fun for the weekend. And you don’t have to wait until the boss clears you for a week-long vacation sometime in 2025. With a little planning and creativity, you could pack a lot of fun – or a lot of relaxation – into one little weekend. Pick one of these mini-vacation ideas, write it down on your calendar in permanent ink and just run with it.
