Dental tooth implants are sincerely not a new idea. They have been in use for more than 40 years now! Egyptian mummies have already been found with the gold wired implants placed in their jawbones. A modern dental implant is basically a titanium screw which will be surgically implanted into the jaw. Further, it will be used as an anchor for a crown, bridge or denture. A dental implant mimics the root of the missing tooth. They have already created ripples and changed the lives of many people. Even though they are quite common now, there are still 3 “myths” that potential patients describe all the time.

  1. Dental Implants are Expensive

Wrong! Dental implants do not cost much more than a normal 3 tooth dental bridge! In India, at Dr. Madhvi’s Dental Clinic the cost is almost identical. The long-term treatment cost of having an implant versus a bridge is much lower since a bridge will last a maximum for about 7-15 years. While your dental implant will most likely never need to be replaced as it is built to last for a lifetime if maintained properly.

If you plan to have a dental bridge, your adjacent teeth will also be irreversibly reduced into smaller teeth for the support. This fact alone is not worth it.

  1. Dental Implants are Painful

Wrong! After getting dental implants done most patients say, “that it was much easier than they thought”. It is just like an extraction done under anesthesia. Still, there are three things that will predict whether this procedure will hurt or not.

The first factor is the ease or difficulty of your unique situation. The second factor is the ability of your body to heal well. If there was a diseased tissue before implant placement in the area, the healing phase might exhibit mild pain. And third, how much skilled is your implant dentist. A skilled clinician will be able to place the implant with maximum precision, without sacrificing much of the bone tissue. Thus, leading to uneventful healing.

So it would not be wrong to say that dental implant placement is an absolutely painless procedure

Anyways, Pain should not be a considerable factor while making your decision. One should choose the treatment that will provide you with the best outcome.

  1. Dental Implants Take A Long Time for tooth replacement

Wrong! Having an implant will usually take about 2-3 months. It is a short-lived sacrifice for an everlasting benefit.

Bone by nature requires a significant time to heal. Have you ever fractured a bone and had to wear a plaster? I’m sure you needed to wear it for several weeks! The bone surrounding a newly placed dental implant has to heal and fuse with the other bone, just like the bones broken in any other body part would have to.

Only if there are any other extensive surgeries involved, it may take longer time. As in the case of a bone graft, it may or may not extend the time it takes for healing. In this case too, the bone is generally ready to bear the load of the crown within 4 months.

Thus, an implant placement and fabrication may take a maximum of 4 months in the whole process.
