Becoming a veterinarian is a dream job for many children, but as an adult, training to be a vet takes a lot of commitment to schooling and financial ties to large student loans. If you think you have what it takes to commit to this and achieve your dreams of becoming a vet, you should follow your passions and go for it! But, if you want to take a different route in an animal-centered career, the good news is that there are several great alternative options to consider. We’ve listed some interesting, often well-paid jobs with animals that might be just what you need.
#1. Pet Groomer:
If you adore working with dogs and cats, then becoming a professional pet groomer could be the perfect career idea for you. Many pet groomers start off working for somebody else and then go on to become self-employed, managing their own clients and choosing the where’s, when’s, and how’s of their work. Most training will take place on the job, but you’ll also need to achieve at least a high school diploma to start off as a pet groomer. Most employers will prefer you to have at least a little experience working with animals; you could volunteer at an animal shelter or walk dogs for your neighbors.
#2. Veterinary Technician:
Maybe you didn’t make the grades or won’t be able to make the financial commitments of studying to become a veterinarian. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t spend your career helping sick and injured animals! Veterinary technicians are just as important for a surgery to run efficiently and ensure the animals in its care are well looked-after, as they perform medical testing to help diagnose and treat sick animals. You can become a veterinary technician by enrolling in a two-year degree or certificate program or opt for the apprenticeship route. It’s a good idea to get some voluntary experience at an animal hospital or rescue shelter to support your learning. Visit Best-Vettechschools.com for more information.
#3. Animal Trainer:
Like groomers, many animal trainers work for themselves and can be their own boss. As a trainer, you’ll be responsible for teaching people’s pets to do certain tasks, such as assisting the disabled. Animal trainers most typically work with easily trainable animals such as horses and dogs, but some will work with other species. As a trainer, it will often be your job to help animals become more accustomed to and comfortable with human interaction.
#4. Veterinary Nurse:
If you have a passion for being hands-on and helping injured and sick animals from the front line, then you might want to consider a career as a veterinary nurse. In this role, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day care of a variety of pets, from cats and dogs to exotic pets or livestock, depending on the veterinary practice you’re based at. Your typical daily tasks will include caring for animals before and after surgery, administering medications, taking care of hygiene, and communicating with concerned owners.
