Everyone loves that cool, refreshing feeling that comes with running a home air conditioner on a hot day. In fact, we like it so much that some people leave it running day and night at a high thermostat level. However, using your air conditioner day and night for long periods of time can wear out the unit faster as well as raise your electric bill. Here are some tips to help your air conditioner work more efficiently.
Turn It Down
Unless you need to keep the thermostat set higher for medical or health reasons, try setting it at a higher temperature with which you are comfortable. Many people set their unit at seventy-five degrees unless it is extremely warm outdoors or their home is unusually stuffy and uncomfortable. Keep in mind that typically the thermostat is going off of the temperature of whatever room or hallway it is located in. If that area is much hotter than the rest of the house, you may notice the AC running more frequently, and you can adjust it accordingly.

Take Advantage of Outside Air
When the sun is shining and the outdoor temperature is lower than usual, you may be able to open the windows and let fresh air inside to cool off your home. Screened patio doors can also let in cooler air. Try opening doors or windows at opposite ends of the house to create a cross breeze. You’ll be surprised at how much that alone can do to cool your home down. In good weather, your family may enjoy spending time outdoors, requiring reduced air conditioner use.
Schedule Routine Maintenance
To keep your AC unit working effectively, have it inspected annually by AC professionals. They can keep the parts in good working order or make any needed repairs. Don’t wait until your unit shows major signs of breaking down, or you may have to wait for an appointment if it is during the busy summer season. Regular maintenance and minor repairs are less costly than major repairs or replacing the unit. In particular, if you notice that the air is blowing warm or the unit is on more than usual, this may be a sign that service is due for the unit.
