There’s an assumption that kids don’t care about fashion, and it’s simply not true. It’s just that kids don’t care about the kids fashion adults care about. They want to look cool, be comfortable, and express their own style, which can be hard when they’re being shoe-horned into a pair of pleated dress pants and a blazer. Or an itchy wool dress and toe-pinching patent leather shoes.
The most enduring kids fashion trends this year – and every year – are the ones that are playful, fun and comfy. Here are five of the best.
1. Bohemian Bairn
This look embraces your child’s free spirit, showcasing free flowing fits, vintage inspired style and clothes made for hours of uncensored, easy day dreaming. Think a maxi dress with leather strappy sandals, or slouch pants and a tank. Pair them with a beaded bracelet, and you’ve got a beautiful bohemian look.
2. Classic Casual
For kids who always let their mouths do the talking, the understated look of timeless casual wear is in. (Let’s face it: it never went anywhere!) Not to be confused with boring, classic casual wear is all about combining bold colours and innovative patterns and textures with more basic wardrobe staples, like the baseball t-shirt, or boardshorts.
3. Sports Luxe
If you can dress up your active wear, so can your kids. Sports Luxe not only looks super cool and confident, but it help your kids get more wear out of their clothes. And this is a major bonus considering they’re going to grow out of them soon!
Just combine a nice, comfy sweater with a pair of their yoga pants or a colourful infinity scarf with some sweats and a tank, and they’re good to go.
4. Hats On!
Boy or girl, hats are a big kids’ fashion trend. Move beyond the baseball hat and think berets, boaters, flat caps, fedoras, sunhats, ascots – you name it. Kids look super adorable in hats. Quick tip: Let them pick out their own. Hats are a pretty personal fashion statement, and you want to ensure they love it and wear it.
5. Little You
The overly cutesy, baby animal infested kids clothing of yesteryear is out. Way out. Kids fashion is trending towards diminutive versions of adult style trends. Skinny jeans, graphic tees, toques, rompers, ankle boots, scarves, and bling are big this year, and hopefully, are here to stay.
When in doubt about dressing your kids, remember inspiration is only a question away: ASK them what they’d like to wear. The answers may sound crazy – and maybe even inappropriate – but at least they are expressing themselves, and being confident. Chances are you can find a happy compromise.
Don’t forget to share your comment on the kid’s clothing.
