Many businesses are opening, and people are leaving their homes to go back to normal life. Most people are already leaving their homes to visit the doctor or get groceries. As more people leave their homes, it is becoming increasingly challenging to maintain social distance, and this is where a face mask comes in.
Why Do You Need a Face Mask?
Today, most businesses and organizations have a face mask policy. You may be locked out of your favorite store because of lack of a face mask. It makes sense to wear a mask, considering that Dr. Fauci noted that between 25 and 50 percent of those infected by the novel coronavirus are asymptomatic and can spread the disease. When an infected person laughs, coughs, speaks, or sneezes near you and you both do not have masks, you will get infected. Using your mask, handwashing, and maintaining social distance are the only ways to stay safe from the infection.
What makes a good face mask?
1. Sewn vs Non-Sewn
Sewn and non-sewn face masks are protective enough if you use them correctly. You can wear either of the masks depending on how much time you have. A non-sewn mask comes in handy when you are in a hurry or if you find yourself out without a mask. The main challenge with a non-sewn mask is that it might not fit well. If you have the time, go for a sewn mask as you can customize it to give it a good fit. You can get patterns from your local hospital to create a mask that meets the set standards.
2. Tightly Woven Cotton Fabric
Tightly woven cotton fabric is more protective than other materials. Ensure the mask has at least two layers of this material. A fabric with high thread count acts as a filter to keep droplets away from your nose or mouth. Such a material still allows you to breathe comfortably. Unluckily, medical grade masks are not affordable for everyone. You can rely on a cloth mask to protect you, but these are not created equal. Be sure to keep your distance as well when you are out. You will need to look into an ultra light face mask that feels comfortable and still protects you from Coronavirus.
3. Filter
A filter is not necessary if your mask has at least two layers of fabric. However, when present, it offers more protection. You do not need an expensive filter – you can add a coffee filter as CDC recommends. If you do not have a coffee filter, look for any other dense filter that can block small particles. While at it, avoid using inorganic materials as some can be dangerous. Materials such as fiberglass, which is common in most filters, can be dangerous when you inhale them.
4. Fit
A good mask should feel comfortable especially when you have to wear it all day. This way, you are not tempted to remove it in public. Pick a mask with a snug fit so that it covers the entire nose and mouth area. Any small opening left on the sides, top, or bottom of the face mask, might let in small particles including the coronavirus. If you don’t feel comfortable in your cloth face mask, you should avoid it and ask your physician to prescribe an alternative face covering.
5. Durability
You will need to wash your face mask every day or after every trip outside your home. As such, the mask fabric and the stitching need to be strong enough to withstand daily washing. If shopping for a mask online, check what consumers say about the strength and durability of the mask before you buy. If your mask has a filter, the washing method will depend on the filter you use. Some filters, such as coffee filters should be discarded after a single use. If you make your face mask at home, prewash the material to ensure it doesn’t shrink after you make the mask.
Wearing a mask is one way to protect yourself and those you love. You need to, therefore, choose a protective mask above everything else. Some designers have turned masks into fashion articles – which is a great thing as you feel proud wearing a good looking mask. Even then, you still need to pick a mask that protects you.
