If you have ever been in a room while using chemical, you have experienced first-hand the physical irritation to your eyes, throat, and skin it could potentially cause. Can you remember ever coughing from the fumes of a cleaner that you thought was considered “mild”? Just think, if it affected you in such a way, what could it be doing to your kids, your pets?

It is something to consider. Dr. Rachel Taliercio who is a pulmonologist with the Cleveland Clinic Asthma Center says that these VOCs can lead to shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing in otherwise healthy children and adults. For people with chronic respiratory conditions like asthma, the symptoms can be even worse.

Here are 6 DIY products that you can make at your home:

Baking Soda & Vinegar

Tired of those oven cleaner fumes. Then fume no more. Mix together baking soda, a little water and a bit of white vinegar. By rubbing the mixture on the walls of your over and letting it sit overnight, in the morning you can simply spray it with a bottle of white vinegar then wipe it gleaming clean!

Drain Cleaner

Do you have stinky drains? We all do from time to time. You know what goes down there? Can you imagine the stuck and smelly good that could fester in there and cause the room to smell? Eliminate the problem by pouring baking soda down the drain and then pouring a bit of white vinegar next. Let sit for about an hour then follow up with boiling hot water. If the drain is not still up to the mark, set an appointment with Mama Ducks Cleaning Service to do a deep cleaning.

Toilet Cleaner

Is the toilet bowl no longer your friend, except when you need it to be? Then how about cleaning it with your other childhood best friend, lemon Kool-Aid? Yes, I did say lemon Kool-Aid. Sprinkle it into the bowl, brush it around, let sit overnight and in the morning flush. Not only do you have a clean bowl, but the bathroom is lemon fresh.

Oil Cleaner

Is your room not smelling up to par? Place 12 to 15 drops of good smelling oil in a spray bottle, add white vinegar and some water, shake and spray away and stinky smell!

Stain Cleaner

The stained shirt got you down? Then perk up with your own homemade fabric stain remover. Add old-fashioned washing soda, vinegar and 3% hydrogen peroxide together in a spray bottle. Shake and spray. Launder the shirt and it is ready to wear with pride again.

Fabric Softener

Here is one that everyone loves. Make your own self-made fabric softener. Simply add water, hair conditioner, vinegar and good smelling oil to the mixture. Now keep it in a bottle beside the washer for use on all of your fabrics in the laundry. There is nothing better or safer to soften and make your clothes smell so good!

I am sure by now you are convinced that making your own household cleaning goodies is the way to go. So get going and get cleaning and save yourself a deep breath and some money.
