From La Union to Borongan, Samar, surfing towns in the Philippines abound. The country is ideal for surf exploration. But if you long for an adventure catching the waves, you might as well gear up.
Remember these things when surfing in the Philippines
1) Schedule surfing from August to November. This is the so-called surfing season, with waves hitting peak quality during these months.
2) Include Siargao on your surf bucket list. Siargao is famous for Cloud 9, one of the five best waves worldwide. Cloud 9 is for advanced surfers, though the surrounding areas are surfable by beginners.
3) Visit all-level surfing towns. With this, you may try the beginner, intermediate, and, hopefully, the advanced waves. But, of course, that is if you’ve already mastered the first two. Other surfing spots recommended for all levels are Baler, Aurora; La Union; Zambales; Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte; Bagasbas Beach, Camarines Norte; and Dahican Beach, Davao Oriental.
4) Join surfing camps. If it’s your first time and you don’t want to pay for one-hour surfing lessons, a surf camp is your best bet. These camps offer conveniences from airport pickup and dropoff, accommodation, complimentary breakfast, surfboard rental, private instructor, transportation to the surfing spots, and island-hopping tour.
5) Prepare a surf travel essential kit. Make sure you have sunscreen to protect your skin while riding the waves against the heat of the sun.
6) Learn surfing etiquette. When surfing in the Philippines, it is also essential to know about communication and the right of way to minimize accidents while wave-riding. Every competent instructor will teach you about this.
Keep these things in mind to enjoy the country’s surfing paradise.
