Being in the military often means being ready to move home at a moment’s notice. When you’re reassigned to another location, you’ll have to pack up and move. A lot of people take their family with them when it’s time to move on. However, finding a new home when you reach your destination isn’t always a pleasant task. Living On-base
The military can require you to stay in family housing on-base. Many families do this, but it’s not always necessary or even possible. A lot of places don’t have any room, so even if you were required to live on-base, you wouldn’t be able to. However, if you do live there, you can find it’s very different to being in other accommodation. There are both pros and cons to doing it. Some families enjoy being able to socialize with and support each other. But it can sometimes be a chaotic and noisy environment to live in, despite all the rules and regulations.
Being Provided with a Rental List
If there is no accommodation on-base, or you don’t want to live there, you can get a list of rentals from your housing office. When you visit them, you can also put your name down for on-base housing, in case you want to live there in the future. The list they give you will have local rentals whose landlords have decided to list themselves with the base. This means that you know they’re military-friendly. It’s a good place to start if you’re not sure where to look for your home. However, you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to.
Choosing a Home Catering to Military Families
There are likely to be a number of places in the area that cater specifically to military families. They know that the base is there and that the people who work there need places to stay. Non-military Housing
You can also find off-base accommodation that isn’t targeted at military personnel. You might find that some other places don’t feel homely enough, so you want somewhere cozier. If you want to rent somewhere that’s just a typical family home, make sure you check the rental agreement. There should be a military clause, which allows you to get out of the contract if you have to move.
