Dated Decor: How to Avoid Soon-to-Be Irrelevant Interior Design

Decorating your home can be a ton of fun and can make your living space feel a whole lot more comfortable. However, it can also be time-consuming and expensive, and you probably don’t want to waste your time and money on decor that will quickly go out of style and become outdated. Luckily, following these tips can help you prevent this from happening.

Stick to Neutrals

First of all, when choosing color schemes for each room in your home, consider sticking to neutrals. Choosing shades of white, black, beige, brown and other similar colors will make it easy for you to decorate without worrying about matching shades. Neutrals are easy on the eyes and always look good to visits. Plus, you won’t have to worry about painting in a trendy color that will appear outdated in just a few short years. Remember that there are neutral shades of other colors if you’re going for a particular look, just don’t go too crazy!

Choose Timeless Pieces

When shopping for pieces for your home, consider looking for timeless pieces that you don’t have to worry about going out of style. For example, real wood furniture is always in style and is almost always a better choice than trendy, cheaply made furniture that is made out of inexpensive materials. Additionally, beautiful items like crystal bowls can be the perfect accent pieces and can be kept for many years and passed on for generations. Leather furniture, Oriental rugs, and other similar items are also often considered to be timeless pieces that will never go out of style. The best way to find out what is timeless is to look at decorating trends over the years. Recurring themes that span decades are the ones to look for. Do you like a few of the decorations in your grandparents’ home and see them in décor stores? It’s more than likely that style is one that will keep on going.

Accessorize with Modern Accessories

Even though you might want to stick to stuff that won’t become outdated in a few short years — or even months — you might still want to add a bit of modern decor to your home. One good way to do so without putting too much time or money into it is to choose modern accessories that are affordable and that can easily be swapped out. For example, if you like a popular pattern or color, consider choosing throw pillows for your couch in this pattern or color. Then, when it becomes outdated, you can swap them out for the newest look so that you can stay on-trend without wasting a lot of money.

As you can see, it’s possible to make your home look great without spending a ton of money on decor that will quickly go out of style. If you follow these tips, you’re sure to feel great about the way that your home looks, and you will not have to worry about having to remodel your home in just a few years because everything is outdated.
