Fad or Fat Burner? A Dive Into Some Popular Diets

There is seemingly always a new diet making the rounds in society. With so many different diets coming and going, it can be difficult to stay in the loop when it comes to picking a healthy and manageable diet. There are many diets that have worked for many different people. Let’s take a look at some recent popular diets and determine if it is a fad or a fat-burning fact.

Ketogenic Diet

The basis of the ketogenic diet has been around for decades. Though the diet was originally typically only used as a form of treatment for certain diseases, recently, many have found success in using the diet as way to burn fat. Essentially, someone on a ketogenic diet would drastically reduce their carbohydrate intake and increase fat intake. Sounds somewhat counterproductive, right? When the body has no carbohydrates to burn for energy, it turns to existing fat storages.

The ketogenic diet will be heavy in healthy fats, such as avocados, olive oil, fatty fish, and coconut. One very popular food that has erupted with the ketogenic diet are called body fat bombs. These small bites are full of fat and flavor and keep you full for hours! This quick and easy snack is single-handedly bringing ketogenic diets to popularity, and more importantly, doing so healthily. Studies have shown that a ketogenic diet can help you lose weight while also reducing your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and high cholesterol. The keto diet is a great diet that is certainly worth a try.

Raw Food Diet

Let’s look at another popular diet that has taken the world of weight loss by storm. It is a diet that has been around for centuries, but recently have become a trend as many try to optimize the diet. The raw food diet is a diet that suggests that you can eat as much food as you want, as long as it is raw and vegetarian. Those who practice the raw food diet consume only raw, fresh, natural foods. According to the diet, cooking and heating foods breaks down enzymes and ultimately destroys some of the nutritional benefits. Though some studies have been done, there is not enough evidence to support this claim.

The raw food diet can vary from person to person, but generally, those on the diet completely cut out processed, pasteurized, foods in favor of more naturally occurring foods, such a fruits and vegetables and even fish, raw dairy, and certain meat products. Though the diet is loaded with nutrients, there are many versions of the diet that prevent us from getting all the nutrients that we need. It is important to really delve into the nutrient makeup of the foods being eaten and to supplement your diet properly so that the body is receiving all the important nutrients it needs.

Some studies have shown that the raw food diet can help with a variety of diseases and illnesses, including improving digestion and heart health, treating constipation and blemished skin, all while maintaining a healthy body weight.

There are tons of diets floating around that promise rapid weight loss and a new healthy lifestyle. While some of these diets hold true to that, there are many that are not fully supported by research, ineffective, or even bad for you. It is very important to talk to your doctor before making any significant diet changes. Seeing a nutritionist or dietitian is a great way to gather more information so you can make a safe, healthy decision that is perfect for your lifestyle. Do you think a dietitian can help you?
