Four Tips to Buy a Car on a Dime

There are many methods of transportation that you can use to get around town, commute to work and more. However, the most convenient option is to drive your own car. In some cases, it may not even be feasible to ride the bus or to ride a bike, such as if you need to get to or from work in the middle of the night. If you have decided that you need to buy a new car soon and have limited funds to do so, you may feel stressed by the predicament that you are in. The good news is that there are many steps that you can take to buy your next car on a dime.

Consider Buying a Pre-Owned Car

Buying a brand new car can cost a fortune, and it is not usually the most cost-effective option available. You could purchase a very old model that has more than 100,000 miles on it. As long as it runs and the engine is in decent condition, this may be a great way to get transportation for only a few thousand dollars or less. You may even be able to pay cash for the vehicle so that you can avoid taking on an expensive auto loan payment. Otherwise, look for a gently-used or certified pre-owned vehicle that has reasonably low miles. Ideally, the vehicle will still have a manufacturer’s warranty on it. This type of vehicle may be priced several thousand dollars less than a new model. Remember that some models that you may love, like the PT Cruiser, have been discontinued and are only available in an older model.

Get a Good Deal on Your Trade-In

If you are trading in an older car to buy a new vehicle, the trade-in value may be essential for you to use as a down payment on your new car. The last thing that you want to do is to leave money on the table when trading your car in. After all, this is money that directly offsets your purchase price for the new car. If you have time available to sell the car on your own, you may get a better deal overall by doing so. This is because a dealership will factor in its own cost to fix up the car and to profit from their efforts when they make an offer to you. If you need to trade the vehicle in so that you can make an immediate purchase, consider driving around to a few dealerships to see which one will give you the best offer.

Shop Around

If you have decided to purchase a used vehicle, consider spending ample time shopping around with various dealerships. The best way to explore inventory is to shop online. Local dealerships typically will have available inventory posted online. You can also use a general used car listing website that may have listings from dealerships and individual owners in it. Pay attention to mileage, features and cost when comparing the options. You also should focus on the vehicle’s history before making a purchase.

Be Prepared to Negotiate

If you have found a truly amazing deal on a gently-used vehicle, you may be inclined to simply jump on the vehicle right away. However, you may still be able to get an even better deal on your purchase. Negotiating is an important skill to have during the car buying process. Understand the resale value of the car, and also pay attention to how long the car has been available for sale in the dealership’s inventory. These are factors that you can use to negotiate for a better price.

When you are looking for a new vehicle on a tight budget, you understandably may feel intense financial pressure. You may also feel a sense of urgency to make a quick purchase. Use these helpful tips to make a smart, budget-minded buying decision.
