If you’re looking for something different to do for your vacation this summer, why not swap your normal habits for a road trip? Taking to the highway with your family or friends for a few weeks can be an amazing experience, taking in new sights and sounds, and enjoying some well-deserved time together. It could also save you some dollars compared to what you normally spend. However, if you’re going to hit the road, there are some things you need to plan first. Here are four ways to make the most of your trip.
What vehicle?
The key to any road trip is, of course, having access to a vehicle. If you don’t already have an auto that’s up to the job, then think about asking your family and friends to see if they wouldn’t mind providing their set of wheels. You need to make sure it’s big enough for all of you to fit comfortably inside, along with all your luggage, equipment, and other essentials.
If none of you in the group have a vehicle suitable enough, you could always make an upgrade. Or how about hiring? Have a look around for deals online and see if you can get a discount on a certain number of days. Pick one that fits your needs and does not break your budget. Depending on what kind of road trip you’re planning, you could also think about hiring a retro ‘camper van’ or a motor home, so you can also sleep on board during your vacation.
Get the paperwork
No matter whether you’re taking your own vehicle, or hiring one, make sure that you have all the right paperwork in place, and this includes insurance. You’ll also want to look at what cover you have if you break down or you need rescuing while on the road. If the worst was to happen and you have an auto accident, you may want to consider getting yourself an attorney.
Plan your route
Before setting off on your road trip, you need to know where you’re going. It may sound like an adventure to just head for the hills and not plan anything, but that could get you into all sorts of difficulties – and cause a few arguments in your group!
You don’t have to plan every single hour of every single day of your trip, but you should at least be setting out a basic route of which towns and cities you want to be heading for on which days, and how you’re going to get there. Will you use your car bike or cycle? You’ll want to factor in stops along the way, to eat and drink, packing in a handlebar bag or your regular bags, and take in any particular sights. Don’t forget to take GPS and a good old-fashioned map with you to help you stay on track!
Book accommodation
As well as having a route in mind, you also need to be thinking about accommodation, if you’re not taking a motorhome with you. So, have a look at the places where you’re heading and think realistically about where you’ll need a bed for the night en-route. You may be able to find places on the way but, if you’re traveling in peak season, you might be better off booking some rooms using the best staycations in the UK in advance to make sure you get somewhere to stay, and it’s at the right price for your budget.
