Goa has evolved into a major tourist destination in the world. This small state on the western coast of India was discovered by Vasco da Gama a Portuguese explorer. They established a Portuguese colony and continued to rule it for approximately 450 years (1505 to 1961). Goa still has some remnants of the Portuguese era with several government buildings, churches and other structures that bear the mark of Portuguese architecture. Many locals also learned Portuguese and conversed in that language.

Goa was liberated in 1961 by the Indian army after a 36 hour= battle. It was incorporated as a union territory of Goa Daman and Diu.

Obviously, some of the Portuguese culture and traditions have also seeped into the local culture. The locals have also accepted some of their cuisines as well.
