Gardening in the Autumn: Preparing For Colder Weather

Get your garden ready for wetter, windier weather for easier maintenance, a tidier look, and a healthier garden come spring.

As the weather changes your garden becomes a different space to the one you used for barbecues and socializing in summer. Wetter, windier weather has an impact on the way that your garden looks, on the way that it needs to be maintained, and the way that it needs preparing for better weather. Let’s take a look at exactly what you need to do to prepare your garden for these windy seasonal changes:

Scoop Up The Debris

Debris is a huge problem in Autumn as the bushes and trees shed their leaves, and blustery winds move dirt and dust around. Scooping up that debris is important to protect your lawn in particular, which can suffocate under lots of wet leaves. Leaves and debris can also block up drains, which can cause problems internally if left to sit long enough.

Protect Your Furniture

Your garden furniture may be sticking around for times when it is OK to host friends and family in a private outdoor space. If it is, try to protect it with appropriate sheeting and plastic tarpaulin so it doesn’t get damaged from the weather. If it is going into inexpensive self-storage you will want to clean it, dry it and package it ready. Cushions in particular should be washed and fully dried before being put into a storage unit.

Dig Out Dead Plants

Plants that only live for one season should be removed now they have died, to make room in your beds for other plants. Once you have taken them out this is a good time to add mulch, fertiliser and compost to add nutrients to the soil.

Declutter

Decluttering your garden and shed of old pots, broken ornaments and unusable tools is important because it tidies the garden and stops the room being taken up by things you don’t want. Try to recycle or give away as much as you can, then get rid of the rest, for a much tidier and cleaner feeling outdoor space.

Consider Some Winter Gardening

If you don’t want to give up on your new gardening hobby because of the weather change, you don’t have to. You could start a winter vegetable patch, or pot some fruit trees. There are plenty of plants that happily grow in winter under the right conditions.

Cut Your Trees

It is important to have a tree surgeon check the safety of any large trees before winter storms set in. Any loose branches or weak branches could be dangerous if allowed to fall, or at the very least they could cause some damage to your property. Having an expert check that your trees are all safe for winter. They can complete any cutting that does need to happen before the worst weather sets in.

Preparing your garden for winter can be a real pleasure in Autumn, when the weather can bring crisp mornings and golden sunshine. By putting this effort into preparing your garden for worse weather, you give yourself a tidier outdoor space that needs minimal maintenance over winter, and one that is ready for use again once the warmer weather comes back in spring.
