Children get bored very quickly. It can be extremely challenging to find something to keep them occupied; especially if it’s cold and wet outside. This issue can be even worse if your kids have ADHD.
Fortunately there is an array of home building projects you can do with your kids. Each of these projects will help to build their imagination and practical skills. It doesn’t matter if you want to create something from Lego or out of real wood; you can do it with the help of your kids.

The Tree House
What child doesn’t want to have a tree house? All you need is a tree that can support the weight of the wood and your kids. If you haven’t got a tree then you can always create a house on stilts; this will give the same effect as a tree house.
The first step will be to create a design; you’ll need to make sure that your kids are involved in this stage if you want them to play in the finished product.
You can then work out what wood you’ll need and how to build the structure. If your kids are young then they will be happy to simply pass you tools and have a go at cutting odd bits of wood. If they are older then they’ll be able to actively help you.
Don’t forget to include trap doors, rope ladders and perhaps even a slide!
The Lego Palace
If you want something a little smaller scale then building something out of Lego is a great idea. To inspire your kids as to what is really possible try getting a picture of a famous landmark. You can then build it together.
Of course you’ll need a good pile of Lego bricks!
Catapult
The handheld catapult is a great small project for you and your kids. All you need is a two pieces of wood tied together at one end and an elastic band attached to the other end of each piece. Pull back and fire your missile.
However, you can take this up a notch by designing and building a more traditional catapult. There are plenty of ideas here to get you started.
Pallet Furniture
Another great project is pallet furniture. This has become very popular in recent years. You will need to ensure you have pallets that have not been treated with chemicals and haven’t carried chemicals. These could represent a health risk.
One of the easiest projects is the pallet bed or chair. In effect you can simply stack the pallets to create the size and height of bed you require.
Of course it’s a good idea to batten them together. Alternatively you can make a more complicated design and create your child’s perfect bed. As long as they are helping you to make it they’ll love it.
Build A Raft
If you have a gentle stream or river near you then you can build your own raft with your children. You may need to get some empty barrels for flotation and then lash pieces of wood to the top.
There are hundreds of different designs you could use but the important thing is to involve your children on each step of the design and creation.
Building the project together is fun but it should be just as much fun to test it out on your local water. You may need to be ready to get wet!
The Garden Shed
This is a practical and relatively easy home building project; depending on the type of shed you intend to create.
You can even make this from pallets if you wish.
A pre-manufactured shed is a great way to teach your child the basics of screwing the frame together and ensuring it is all supported properly.
The finished shed could be a workshop for new home building projects you can do with your kids.
The only real limit to what you can create is your imagination.
