How to Fit Your HVAC Around Your Home Renovations

Remodeling a home requires significant planning and preparation. One of the first things you should do is organize the worklist so that everything proceeds in a logical sequence without causing undue disruptions or delays. It can be hard to figure out what order to do renovations in, or how to make your renovations fit around necessary utilities. This requires evaluation, prior planning, and proper scheduling of materials and renovations. Since HVAC updates will play an important role in your renovation, here are a few tips that can help you to efficiently schedule the necessary maintenance and upgrades.

Evaluate Your HVAC Needs

First, you need to evaluate your HVAC needs. You need to understand what exactly needs to be fixed before you can fix it. If your furnace or air conditioner has been making strange noises for a while, or if either system is not working as it should, you might want to have your HVAC system checked before starting a renovation project. In extreme hot or cold weather, you don’t want to be without household air conditioning or heat if the system should fail. But if it seems like there are no problems or minor concerns, you can probably afford to wait until you get to that point in your remodeling work before having the issue assessed. Be sure that you know what needs to be fixed on your HVAC system before planning remodels around it.

Organize Priority Repairs

Be sure to prioritize the most important repairs. When the HVAC furnace or AC breaks down completely, you might need to address the problem immediately rather than wait, not only to keep the house at a comfortable temperature but also to avoid the development of worsening problems or higher costs. Unless it will seriously disrupt your renovation plan, schedule furnace or air conditioning repair work as soon as possible to keep the HVAC system operational. Any HVAC problems that pose a safety risk, like a carbon monoxide leak in the heating system, must be addressed immediately.

Coordinate HVAC with Other Renovations

When the HVAC system just needs routine maintenance or a minor update, you can schedule it in sync with the other repairs and updates you have planned. There may be a priority order to the tasks that need to be done, with a problem-free HVAC system lower on the list than, for example, a leaky roof. You might also choose a top-down or bottom-up approach to your remodeling work, which will place organize the HVAC updates accordingly. By coordinating your renovations, you will be able to get multiple problems addressed at once.

Include Anticipated Upgrades

Although you may try to cut costs by tending only to the pressing repairs of your home, a renovation is a good time to decide what future upgrades your HVAC system may need. For example, if you are adding a room or enclosing a porch for year-round use, you might need an HVAC update or add-on to include that area as well. Have the work done now if you can afford it to avoid an additional project date later.

Include your current and projected HVAC needs in your home remodel to keep the system working efficiently now and after your renovation.
