Many architects, interior designers, and homeowners are leveraging smart glass technology to create modern spaces with innovative features.  Switchable smart glass is also called intelligent glass and electrochromic glass. It is a novel technology that makes a glass material change its appearance from transparent to opaque when exposed to an electric current.

Here are some unique ways this technology has been used in creating smart interiors for homes and businesses.

Smart Glass Partitions

Modern home builders use smart glass partitioning to create open-space homes and offices without sacrificing the privacy that conventional walls provide.   Architects and designers are now making the best use of small spaces and building open floor plans without hassle.  For instance, smart glass is used to partition the bathroom from the adjoining rooms to provide ample space without neglecting the privacy required while using the facilities.  A simple flip of the switch turns the bathroom walls opaque to give them the privacy needed.  The same goes for other living areas in the home and workspaces in offices.

Create Multifunctional Extensions

New extensions are popular as open-plan living spaces attached to the main building. Most homes limit their use due to the lack of privacy from the exterior. However, smart glass technology has made this space multifunctional by allowing the homeowner to activate the smart glass privacy mode as the need arises.  Smart glass partitions can be turned opaque to keep away prying eyes. At the same time, smart glass roof lights can be made transparent to enjoy the radiance of natural light. Even in its privacy mode, smart glass allows the majority of natural light through.

Smart Glass SkyLights

Conventional skylight is not a new building design concept. It brings natural illumination indoors and provides awe-inspiring aesthetics. However, the shortfall of traditional skylights is the absolute lack of control. Smart glass skylight allows you to enjoy all the benefits of conventional skylights while offering you the power to control to tweak the skylight as the need arises. For instance, the skylight can be designed to be energy-efficient and self-tinting in response to intense heat or turned to completely opaque altogether.  Smart glass gives homeowners the freedom to control skylights the way they want.

Ceiling to Floor Windows

Interior designers use ceiling-to-floor windows and doors in modern buildings to create architectural designs that offer natural illuminations to the home and office interiors.  However, using blinds and curtains with these kinds of design plans can be impossible or awkward. That is why interior designers use smart-glass as a viable solution for ceiling-to-floor window designs. It allows the room occupant to activate the opaque mode when privacy is required.

 Amazing  Integration Options

While all the usage scenarios mentioned above are inspiring innovations, the integration options take the smart technology to another level.  For instance, digital switching technology allows the integration of small glass control into mobile apps. Thus, allowing the occupant to operate the smart glass using a mobile phone within the building or remote locations. Smart glass can also be integrated with sensors;  automating the control through dynamic features such as lighting and movements.  The innovative smart glass opens a new frontier in the design of smart homes.
