How to Make Room for a Nursery in Your Starter Home

Life tends to throw surprises at you when you least expect them. For example, you may have just bought a gas-guzzling vehicle when you find out you got a new job that’s far away from home. Or you may have just purchased a large supply of dairy products and found out you were lactose intolerant.

Or perhaps you just moved out of your apartment into a starter home, and now you’ve found out that you’re pregnant. Looking around your small home, it can seem as though you’ll never be able to fit your new baby and all their accessories into the space. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to make your small space seem big and provide all the space your baby needs.

Use a Closet

For an adult, having a room “as small as a closet” is a negative thing. For a newborn baby, however, having a room this size isn’t that big of a deal. If you have an extra large walk in closet, you can set it aside for your baby, placing the crib and a few other essentials inside.

Of course, the doors should be left open or removed entirely. This approach saves quite a bit of space so you can still have room for your personal belongings as well.

Take Down A Wall

Perhaps the mere mention of putting your baby’s nursery in a closet is cause for you to get a little uneasy. If so, you may want to consider knocking down some walls to combine two or more closets to form a much larger nursery that you can be proud of. Of course, walls between closets aren’t the only ones you can knock down, as there are lots of other options, even in your small home, that you can explore to make a nursery for your baby. Look over the blueprints of your home with a professional home remodelers to get some ideas of where you may be able to expand or combine space.

Add Some Space

If you’ve completely maxed out the space in your starter home, it may be time to add on to get ready for your baby. Home remodelers can help you design, plan, and build this new addition to your home for the new addition to your family. While this is a higher-cost option, the added space will make your home far more flexible and more sellable if you decide to move in the future.

Use Storage

If a lack of space in your home is caused by an excess of “stuff,” then the simple solution to create space for a nursery may be to simply put some of that stuff in storage. A storage unit provides a secure and easily accessible solution that allows you to store your belongings for as long as you need and then retrieve them once you get a better handle on the space issue. Plus, having a storage unit will allow you to de-clutter other rooms in your home, as well.

The most important thing to remember as you prepare your home for your baby is that your baby will love you the same, regardless of the size of your home. Whether you bring your baby home to a small starter home or a giant mansion, as long as you give your baby love and nurturing, they will be happy and content. Rest easy even when you’re trying to make everything perfect, as it will all turn out okay in the end.
