Find out how to store crockery and other fragile items for self storage, to keep them in great condition until you are ready to use them again.
Self-storage units have almost endless reasons for using them. One of the most common reasons that people use self storage is as a space to protect their most precious belongings during a house move, or renovation; while living abroad on in temporary rented accommodation.
To help you get your crockery and other fragile items ready for your self storage unit, we have some top tips from the professionals at Cambridge Self Sorage to help you pack effectively:
Step One – Gather Your Materials
You will need the right materials to protect items that are fragile. Any old bag or box simply won’t do the job very well at all. Instead, consider gathering the following useful materials for your packing session:
- Sturdy boxes
- Bubble wrap
- Packing peanuts
- Parcel tape
- Cellotape
- Scissors
- Cardboard separators
- Newspaper
- Labels
- Marker pens
Remember that your self storage company may sell high-quality packing supplies that you can purchase. You know these will be good quality and up to the job as it is in the company’s best interests to help you securely pack you items so they are not damaged while in storage.
Step Two – Set Aside Time
You’ll always be better off setting aside plenty of time for packing anyway, but especially when it comes to packing your most fragile items. You really need your focus when you’re ensuring the items are packed well. So set aside an afternoon (or two) when the kids are at school and when the pets are asleep from a walk, and there are no other distractions so you can entirely focus on the task in hand.
Step Three – Packing Your Things
When it comes to packing your fragile items you will want to first ensure the bottom of the box is completely secure. If you are using cardboard boxes then use professional packing tap to seal the base. Once you know that it is secure, ensure that the crockery going into it is dry and free of any dust and debris. Then wrap each item separately with tissue paper or old newspaper (fr the more eco-conscious) and place them in the box leaving little or no room between items. You should fill the box to the top and then close it so that the top is flat. Add bubblewrap to fill any gaps if necessary. Once the box is closed, reinforce its strength with as much packing tape as you feel it needs.
Step Four – Labelling
Labelling is so important when you pack for personal self-storage, but especially with fragile items so that anybody moving the box knows the fragility of what is inside. Don’t be shy with labelling your items clearly with fragile stickers and information about what is inside. The more chance the boxes have of being treated gently, the more likely the items inside have of staying in tact.
Step Five – Stacking
Once the boxes of your crockery get to the self storage unit it is important they are stacked properly to avoid anything getting broken whilst it is in self storage. When you place the items in the unit take care to:
- Avoid stacking anything heavy on top of the box
- Avoid placing the item on uneven surfaces
- Keep the fragile stickers on the box in easy view so that you remember to be careful with it when you next visit your unit
With the tips above your crockery and fragile items should remain in great shape until you take them out of storage again.
