How to Quickly and Naturally Relieve Pain

If you suffer from joint and muscle pain or headaches often, you’ve likely tried over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen to relieve your discomfort. However, these medications could have harmful side effects if you use them for too long or take more than the designated dosage. That’s why many people are turning to natural remedies to relieve pain and discomfort without side effects. Some of the natural treatments you may want to consider include herbs, essential oils, and even alternative therapies that will reduce your pain and are safe to use long-term. Here are some treatments that may be beneficial.

Rosemary

Rosemary is an essential oil that can serve as a natural pain reliever. According to some researchers, the rosemary plant can help treat headaches and reduce muscle and joint pain. The oil can even be used to treat seizures. Rosemary also helps to reduce inflammation, relax muscles, and improve your memory. To use rosemary oil, dilute the oil in a carrier oil like almond or olive oil. Use 3-5 drops of rosemary oil for every ounce of carrier oil. Researchers assert that rosemary acts on opioid receptors in the brain which are connected to pain sensation. A clinical trial in 2013 discovered that rosemary oil can reduce pain in people going through opiate withdrawal.

Cloves

People have been using cloves for centuries to relieve toothache. A 2006 study revealed that clove gel is just as effective as benzocaine for treating needle pain from dental procedures. More research is necessary to see whether clove is just as effective for other types of pain. Researchers also assert that cloves can reduce inflammation and have antiviral, antifungal, and antioxidant properties.

Capsaicin

People have also used capsaicin, an ingredient found in chili peppers, to relieve pain naturally. This natural substance can be consumed by eating spicy peppers or applied topically in a cream or pain spray. You may feel a tingling sensation on your skin, which is normal, but you should discontinue use if your skin is burning or irritated. Researchers are still not quite sure why capsaicin relieves pain. However, some health professionals believe that capsaicin makes the skin less sensitive by affecting nociceptive fibers, which are nerves that transport pain signals.

Ginger

Ginger is a root that has great potential to be an effective pain “medication.” A systematic review conducted in 2015 revealed that taking two grams of ginger a day made a moderate difference in muscle pain from exercise when people took the ginger for at least five days. Researchers also found that ginger can speed up muscle recovery and reduce inflammation from exercise. You can add ginger to your diet by making a tea from ginger root or adding raw ginger to smoothies and soups. You can also take a ginger supplement.

Lavender

Lavender is a popular natural remedy for pain relief. You can also use lavender oil to relax the nervous system and promote restful sleep. A 2012 study found that inhaling lavender essential oil can relieve pain from migraine headaches when compared to a placebo. Additional research also suggests that lavender can provide the body with antioxidants and reduce swelling in animals, which means they may have similar effects in humans. Lavender is not currently regulated by the FDA, so it’s best to use this oil and other essential oils with caution. If you want to use lavender oil as a natural pain relief remedy, speak with your doctor to determine whether the oil is safe. While these herbal and natural solutions can be beneficial, they may not be effective for certain types of pain. This is why you may need to add these oils, creams, or foods to other pain remedies to get the relief you need. If you have severe pain, such as discomfort associated with a health condition, talk to your physician about natural ways to relieve pain. Even if your doctor suggests that you continue taking prescription medications for pain, you can include some of these essential oils and topical treatments in your regimen. You can also use ingredients like capsaicin and ginger in your food and beverages to reduce your pain and take advantage of other health benefits like improved digestion and blood circulation.
