The holiday season can be a hard time to stay healthy and fit, with all that delicious food and all those holiday snacks floating around out there. It can be hard to say no to grandma’s cutout cookies and the second helping of turkey and gravy, not to mention the days of leftovers.

Just because all of that food is available doesn’t mean that you need to eat it all or overeat. Moderation is the key, and so is taking your time to eat. Here are some tips that can hopefully help you stay fit, and not overdo the food, next holiday or anytime of the year.

Watch What You Eat

Eat smaller portions if there are a lot of the things on the menu that you want to eat. Although, smaller portions are a wise choice anyway, and eating a nice healthy salad first to fill you up with goodness is a wise choice as well.

You may also want to consider eating something before you go to family events as well, which can help you make healthier choices and do less pigging out. Plus, this is also a good idea for people that suffer from food allergies or diet restrictions. You never know what someone else puts in stuff when they cook it and it can begin to be a annoying after asking about each individual dish, especially if it’s a potluck.

Don’t Deprive Yourself

Even though you want to watch what you eat, you don’t want to deprive yourself of anything that you may want to eat, like that slice of pumpkin pie you have been looking forward to. You just want to eat a small piece and no go crazy with it.

Just don’t fill up on the junk food. If you feel like you need to try a little bit of everything, make sure that it is literally a little bit.

Don’t Skip Fitness

Your fitness routine is even more important during the holiday months. If it’s snowing and cold outside you may find it harder to get in your daily walk, but you need to make a plan for a indoor fitness. Workout at home, get a gym membership, whatever you do, make sure that you are getting exercise.

Control Your Cocktails

Food isn’t the only issue that can add some weight to your waist, you should also watch the cocktails you are drinking. Mixed drinks and beer both have a lot of calories and can add up. That means that even New Year’s Eve poses a risk for your health and your weight.

The holidays can be fun, but they can also be a time of sloth, and you don’t want to put on a bunch of weight that will take you forever to get back off. Who needs weight loss New Year’s resolutions if you just work to be healthy and happy all year, even during the holidays!
