More often than not, you’ll likely be looking for a way to make the general running of your home that bit cheaper. The best way to do this is by investing in renewable energy.
Renewable energy will help to cut down your energy bills hugely, in fact, with enough of an investment, you could cut them out completely.
Make sure to read below for our different ways to power your home with renewable energy, written in collaboration with Summit Energies, leading providers of Renewable Energy Bristol.
Solar Panels
Solar panels are a great way to use the sun to generate electricity for your home. Solar photovoltaic panels are installed on your roof and will take the sun’s rays, converting them into electricity to power your home.
These panels will generate power during the day and don’t be mistaken, it doesn’t necessarily have to be sunny in order for them to work. This is because any excess power generated on sunny days will be stored in batteries so you can still use the electricity when the sun goes down.
What’s more, any excess power you generate can be sold into the national electricity grid.
Wind Turbines
Wind turbines are not just for big wind farms! Smaller wind turbines are available for domestic purposes, which generate electricity by the wind turning the blades.
In fact, the Energy Saving Trust estimates that a 6kW domestic turbine can save around £250 a year on electricity as well as earning on the Government’s Smart Export Guarantee.
Hydro Power
Hydroelectric power is generated from water flowing downhill to generate electricity. Therefore, should you be lucky enough to live close to a lake or river, it could be a great option for you.
There are many large-scale hydroelectric power plants across the country, but smaller-scale domestic options are available.
Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps use the heat from the outside air to provide you with heating and hot water. In fact, this system will work in a similar way to a fridge, yet in reverse.
This is an incredibly clean and environmentally-friendly source of heat, which will be virtually silent and save you money on your heating bills.
Biomass Systems
A biomass system will burn organic materials such as wood pellets, chips and logs to provide you with heating and hot water. This is an incredibly low carbon method of heating, especially when compared to fossil fuels, and overall a system will save you money.
Solar Thermal
A solar thermal system will provide you with hot water and heating all year round, using solar panels fitted on your roof.
The power they generate is then used to heat up hot water that is stored in a hot water cylinder.
There are many different types of solar thermal systems available, so you’ll be sure to find a system that works best for your requirements.
The above are all excellent options for your home, and there are many more available out there. So, why not take the first steps towards making your home much cleaner and greener today.
