Slow the Clock on Hecla Island
As you arrive at Hecla Island, the first thing that you’ll notice is the massive expanse of natural wonder at your feet. From beautiful hiking trails through the woods to gentle excursions on Sunset Beach, you’ll be able to tailor your trip to your mood. While Hecla Island is touted as an outdoor getaway, you don’t have to be a Bear Grylls to enjoy your time. Let’s highlight a few activities that you can enjoy no matter your experience level or the time of your visit.
1) Little Limestone Lake – Hecla Island is more than just beachside strolls and ice fishing. If you want to see the largest marl lake in the world, you’ve come to the right place. Carve some time out of your itinerary in order to head down to Little Limestone Lake. As the largest marl lake on the planet, you’ll be fascinated by the color of the water. When calcium carbonate deposits are in the water, the lake turns a fascinating color. When the deposits begin to dissolve, the lake turns back to a translucent blue. The Little Limestone Lake is so special that it is currently being preserved by the World Conservation Union.
2) Wildlife Tower Trail – While there are plenty of rigorous hikes for those inclined, nothing really beats a gentle stroll through an area filled with wildlife. The Wildlife Tower Trail is located near the southern tip of Hecla Island. You can take a short thirty-minute walk near the Grassy Narrows March all the way to the viewing tower. Try to go either at dawn or dusk if you want to see some of the incredible wildlife in the area. If you are lucky, you’ll get to see a moose weaving through the woods. Don’t forget to bring your camera and an extra jacket!
3) Fishing on Hecla Island – No matter what time of the year you come to Hecla Island, you’ll have access to a world-class fishing destination. If you come during the summer, head down to the fishing pier located at Hecla Village. If you want to fish during the winter, partner up with the local businesses in order to get outfitted for an ice fishing session. If you’ve never ice fished before, you can hire a local angler to walk you through the process. While Hecla Island is touted as an outdoor getaway, you don’t have to be a Bear Grylls to enjoy your time. Let’s highlight a few activities that you can enjoy no matter your experience level or the time of your visit.
