Many businesses run from self storage units and so the stock becomes even more precious, because it represents the livelihood of the owner. Here are some basic tips to make sure your self storage unit is as secure as possible:
Onsite security
Depending on how precious the contents of your unit are, you will have more than likely already looked into the onsite security before you committed to the unit. If you’re researching a facility you’ll want to make sure as much is done by the company owning it to keep your stock safe. Check to see when the reception area is manned and if deliveries are signed in and out. You should also check if they have security cameras and if they are manned and checked. You should also make sure the site is locked up if and when the reception area is closed. Most sites have heavily padlocked gates and various internal entry points to ensure access isn’t easy for potential criminals.
Door alarms
Some units have door alarms as well as padlocks to ensure access is only gained by those with keys or codes to the lock up. If your facility doesn’t have door alarms, find out their rules on additional lock up security and if they need to know the codes of any alarms you add to the unit. Most self containment companies will allow you to add additional security as long as you enable the security staff to have the codes or extra keys in case they need to get into the unit.
Insurance
Even though you’ll have some level of protection at the facility you’ll still want to look into insurance. If you’re storing low value items for a long time, you may not need to use insurance cover at all, however, if you’re using the unit as a business or for storing high value items it is recommended. Insurance will be cheaper as you are storing your items somewhere that by law, is someone elses responsibility. The fact they will have their own security will take your premiums right down, so it’s a much smaller outlay than you would have if you were using a warehouse or similar space.
Lighting
The facility should have adequate lighting onsite to ensure you can see what you are doing at any time of the day or night. Expect a well lit facility that has movement sensored lighting at the very least, as well as general lighting keeping the entire facility well visible.
Keep it secret
Many people make the mistake of telling everyone and anyone exactly what is contained within their self storage unit unit and how much it is worth. Remember, crimes can be carried out by someone you know. Whilst security at self storage facilities is very high, with controlled access, electrified fencing, CCTV and sometimes security guards there are always ways for a determined thief to gain access. Try to keep stock awareness to a “need to know” basis so that you’re not actively advertising the expensive goods contained within your rental space.
