Outdoor Activities to Enjoy This Summer

With summer around the corner, it’s time to look forward to those fun, warm-weather activities. Due to self-quarantine, you may not be able to enjoy the beach, but that’s alright – we can make do with other ideas! From a day-long hike to a backyard scavenger hunt, there are so many ways to stay entertained and active.

Take a look at these outdoor activities.

1. Learn How to Rollerblade

If you don’t own a pair of roller skates, it’s time to learn a new hobby. This activity can be a fun way to build muscle and burn calories – and explore your neighborhood, too! It’s essential to practice on a flat surface, like a driveway. You may want to wear some kneepads and long-sleeves to protect yourself if you fall. Once you’ve conquered those first steps, venture out onto a safe path.

Don’t forget to bring a helmet, too! As always, safety matters most.

2. Go for a Hike

We don’t always have time to explore our local parks, so why not make it a point to plan some summer escapades? You can either choose a trail that’s close to home or set aside an entire day for an adventure. Remember that some parks have closed because of COVID-19, so double-check before you leave. Then, put on some sturdy tennis shoes and bring enough water for everyone!

You can also pack a picnic lunch to eat somewhere along your hike – turn this activity into a day-long excursion!

3. Try Rock Climbing

Summer can be the perfect time to discover different skills. Maybe you’ve hiked some of the best trails across America – but what about rock climbing? This sport adds a whole new angle to outdoor adventures. Plus, you don’t need to learn by yourself. You can contact beginner and professional groups that are still open and get some advice on how to get started.

That said, you shouldn’t expect to become an expert overnight. Like other talents, rock climbing takes some time. Practice makes perfect.

4. Host a Backyard Movie Night

This idea isn’t too active, but it’s perfect for those days when you need to wind down. Don’t watch your favorite movies on the couch. Instead, head outside on a warm night and set up a backyard movie theater. You can bring blankets and pillows to create a cozy viewing area. Then, set up a projector or use your trusty laptop to play whatever films you like most. Feel free to serve snacks, too!

If you want decent sound quality, hook up a portable speaker to whatever device you want to use. Everyone should be able to hear loud and clear.

5. Plant a Garden

There’s never been a better opportunity to build a beautifully landscaped outdoor area. You can consider this garden to be your personal summer project. Don’t hesitate to let your kids help, but it’s always nice to set aside time for yourself, too. Before you start to plant, think about the seasonal fruits and vegetables that you want to grow. You may need to make a few adjustments to your set-up.

Then, start your new hobby! You can plant flowers for an entirely redesigned backyard space, too. A simple home improvement endeavor can be tons of fun.

6. Arrange a Scavenger Hunt

If your kids feel a little bored and you don’t have an activity on the calendar, you may need to do something at home. That’s when it’s time to set up an outdoor scavenger hunt. Don’t feel like you need to buy a bunch of special prizes, either. This activity can be super laid back and crafted with household items. After you find objects that you want to hide, write down some simple clues.

You can look online for pre-made scavenger hunt themes, rules and hints, as well. Either way, your kids can run around outside and use their minds to work together. There’s no better way to spend a warm afternoon!

7. Play Wiffle Ball

A cousin to baseball, Wiffle Ball follows similar rules but requires different equipment. Originally, manufacturers decided on a small plastic ball as a safer alternative to its original counterpart. This way, everyone could play – whether they were at home or a local playground. These balls won’t break any object, so feel free to set up a field wherever you have a little space.

You can organize an afternoon tournament if there are enough people. Otherwise, don’t take yourself too seriously. This game offers an easy way for children to learn about physical activity, along with teamwork and sportsmanship.

Use These Ideas for a Fun-Filled Summer

No one wants to stay inside all summer, so be sure to use these ideas to head outside! Whether you want to stick with a workout or chill in your backyard, you and your family can enjoy an awesome summer.
