The process of choosing a traditional school normally consists of finding one that is in close proximity to your home, that follows your religious studies or views, and whether it’s a private school or not. The internet, however, has changed that process. As online education is now seen as a more legitimate form of education, and a good choice for children and families who prefer to educate their children at home.

That is not to say it is the best option for all children, or the only option you should consider. As there are some skills, for example social skill, that kids will not learn from an online education. As a parent, it is up to you to weigh up what you think are the pros and cons of an online education, and make the right choice for, or with, your child.

In this article we look at five reasons you should consider an online education for your child – whether the start of their Elementary School education in Cape Town or an IELTS course in Singapore – whatever their age.

It is Customisable to fit your Child’s Needs

Online education is more customisable than parents think, meaning whatever you child’s academic needs are, they can be met through a specific education plan created especially for them. For example, if your child has special needs, their needs can be met through a special program that caters for the way they learn.

They’ll Learn Responsibility and Independence

Without teachers and tutors watching over them throughout each day, kids who are educated online at home naturally learn how to be responsible and independent. This is because they have to take control of their own studying and learning process. They will need to follow their set timetable in order to get their work done, and put in a lot of time and effort into their studies to get their assignments due on time.

They can Learn at their Own Pace

Each child is different, meaning that some have a photographic memory, some will need more time than others and lengthier explanations in order to learn and retain information, and some may need more of a hands-on education. An online education gives your child the chance to learn at their own pace and in their own preferred way, instead of falling behind in a classroom setting, for example.

It Helps Kids Develop their Passions

Online students are more than likely to finish their lesson plans ahead of those attending traditional school settings. Meaning there is more time for them to take part in activities and subjects that interest them the most, whether it’s art or music. It is, of course, important to make sure that all of their school work is done before they take part in what they consider ‘fun’, but this will only encourage them to do their studies knowing they have something to look forward to when they are finished.

More Attention from their Teacher

As an online student, their virtual teacher may not be sitting in front of them, but your child’s custom made online curriculum aims to give kids more one-on-one time and attention. Virtually this would include taking part in FaceTime or Skype sessions. By doing this, their teacher is concentrating solely on them, instead of contending with a classroom of children needing the same attention, too. Your child is more likely to be closer to their virtual teacher than they would be to one in a traditional classroom setting, meaning they will feel more comfortable to ask questions and communicate any issues they may have, making the learning process easier.

Regardless of your child’s age, these considerations apply to all levels of education. Online learning has come a long way since it started, with more advancements to come in the near future that will undoubtable continue to give students different ways to learn and develop important skills.
