For the students who wish to take their graduate studies abroad, appearing and getting a good GRE score is vital. This Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a computer-generated test so that no two candidates get the same test paper. The score for this is for 340. The GRE score alone does not guarantee a seat in the university – it is an important part of the selection process.
The breakup of the GRE test
You have three parts in the GRE test. The first part is the Analytical Writing where you have one hour. You have to do two tasks. One is to ‘Analyse an Issue,’ and the other is to ‘Analyse an Argument.’ The second part is the Verbal Reasoning test. The third is the Quantitative Reasoning test. If you like to take up the GRE preparation course, Bangalore has many coaching centres.
Practice is the key, and though you are good, there is always the fatigue factor. So, take long and tough mock tests often. Do a lot of speed reading as this will the most exhausting thing in the Verbal tests. After the test, the candidate can see his or her GRE score. They have the option to cancel the score. The cancelled scores will not appear on the GRE score card, so the University will not know that you had a poor score.
Cancel and reinstate your score
If you wish to reinstall a cancelled score, you can do so by paying a fee of $50. After cancelling the score, the student can retake the exam after 21 days. If the candidate scores lower marks than before he or she can reinstate the marks he scored earlier. You can take the GRE 5 times in a year. The period between two attempts must be at least 21 days. For the GRE exam preparation, Bangalore is a good place since it has many coaching centres that cater to Indian students.
One has to be on the lookout for the cancellation of the test registration;if this happens, you might lose 50% of the fees. This is if you make the cancellation 4 days ahead of the test. If there are less than four days, you lose all your money. So, the best option is to reschedule the test rather than cancel it.
Prepare well with the coaching
When preparing for the exam, revise words and use flashcards. Start with 100 new words in a day and work your way upward. Revise and add more; keep doing this for 3 months at least before the test. Remember, when applying to a foreign university, you must show the GRE score. After you finish your exam, you can send your score to 4 universities on the day of the exam. There is no charge for this.
After this, you must pay $27 to send the marks to any university. But, you can choose which marks you wish to send. The university will only see this and not the other marks you got in your other attempts. So, decide which universities you want to apply to and keep the list ready on the day of the test.
