Sencha

The most popular green tea that is consumed majorly and is originated from Japan. Sencha is the newest leaves that represent the month of harvest also known as ‘new leaves .’ The leaves from the last harvest are known as kocha also old leaves. This type of green tea is distinguished by its aroma and flavor. Sencha shares its feature with ichibancha green tea and also sambandha with respect from its flavor.

Fukamushi Sencha

Fukamushi Sencha is another type of green tea that is consumed widely. It is also known as Fukamushi Ryokucha where Fukamushi stands for “boiling for a long period” or “over steamed.” This allows the leaves to thoroughly expose in water leaving a powdery substance. The tea thus looks darker green and stronger in taste. An interesting characteristic about this tea is that even if it is not totally dissolved in the water but it still benefits your body. Gyokuro

This kind of green tea is grown very differently from others. While rest of them are exposed to the sun, gyokuro is wrapped in a cloth or reed before picking from the plants for approximately 20 days. This enhances the taste of the leaves by increasing amino acid theanine and alkaloid caffeine making it a little sweeter.

Kabusecha

The cultivation process of Kabusecha is similar to that of Gyokuro (above) just that the time of 20 days. The flavor of this tea matches with Sencha and gyokuro both but a little sweeter. The leaves are less grassy and more vegetal.

Matcha

Matcha has been used traditionally in Japan for over 100 years, and the base of this green tea is called tencha. The features of matcha are similar with sencha.

Tencha

Tencha is the main ingredient that is used to grow matcha. They are also grown under ‘covered culture’ process and are covered for more than 20 days. The leaves of matcha are dried without rolling them in cloth like gyokuro.

Genmaicha

The word ‘genmaicha’ is derived from the word ‘brown rice’ in Japanese. It is prepared by combining soaked and steamed roasted rice with Sencha or other tea in 50:50 ratio. It is caffeine free which is good for children as well as elderly.

Hojicha

when other types of green teas and Sencha are roasted, Hojicha is prepared. This gives the leaves the roasted aroma which is different from other types of tea. It is light in taste and less bitter than sencha.

Shincha

Known as ‘new tea,’ shincha is the first tea leaves picked up during the harvest season. This tea is very refreshing and little sweeter in taste and also caffeine free.

Ichibancha, Nibancha, and Sanbancha

After the first picking of ichibancha during the harvest Nibancha and Sanbancha are picked. They are very similar in taste but are named differently because of the time during which they are cultivated.
