Some Things You Should Know When Sharing the Road with Large Trucks

Whether you live in a small town or a big city, you’re likely to share the road with a large truck or two during your commute. Although driving next to or behind a truck that is twice or three times the size of your car can be a little daunting and even annoying at times, the trucking industry is invaluable.

Without 18-wheelers on the road, we’d be without our groceries, household items, and even all of our “luxury” things. That said, sharing the road with large trucks can be dangerous at times. Here are some tips for staying safe and a few things you should know when sharing the road with big rigs:

Trucking is Difficult

Ever look at a truck driver and thought, “I could do that!” Driving a large truck is not as easy as it looks. The hours are long, it can get boring being alone on the road, and it can be stressful sharing the road with various vehicles (especially during rush hour in a metropolis).

Not only is a difficult occupation at times, but truck drivers are committed to safety, and they are responsible for getting their cargo to a destination on time and in perfect condition.

Sharing the Road is Hard for Truckers, Too

If you think that sharing the road with a large truck is annoying and mildly inconveniencing, truck drivers probably feel the same way. Even though they have a better vantage point, in theory, fellow motorists tailgate, hide in blind spots, and drive impatiently and recklessly.

If you value your safety, keep your distance when following a large driver and stay out of their blind spots also known as the “No Zones.”

Truckers Can’t Speed Up or Slow Down Quickly

Another reason why it’s important to keep a safe distance from a large truck is the fact that the driver can’t speed up or slow down as fast as standard vehicles. If you engage in tailgating, not only is a bad driving habit, it is also dangerous and could cause an accident.

Don’t Forget to Signal Your Turns

Signaling your turns, passing, or lane changes is always important, but even more so when sharing the road with a large truck. Keep in mind that they need to see you first and then make the proper adjustments in their driving. Failure to use your turn signal is not only rude but can increase your risk of an accident.

Stay Focused

You should always be alert and focused on the road whenever you are driving, but it’s especially important when traveling near a big rig. Since it’s difficult to see what’s in front of a large truck or if the driver needs to pull over or take an exit, staying focused and free of distractions will keep you driving defensively and decrease your risk of a serious accident.

The next time you’re stuck in stop-and-go traffic on the freeway, be patient and resist the urge to honk at the large truck in front of you. Unless you’ve been behind the wheel of a semi, don’t assume that it’s the easiest or safest of jobs.
