Family camping can be a lot of fun. However, there are always ways to tuck in a bit of extra planning that will make them so memorable. With this and the fact that, with children, things can go from great to less than awesome, here are a few ways you can get the best possible experience.

1. Bins are a Lifesaver

Bins–or “totes” as some call them—can save you space and trouble. Packing them with a list also helps, to ensure that you’ve thought of everything. For one, you can pack ahead of time, and as time permits. For another, bins are stackable and can be closed up easily, making it really useful on camping trips with children of all ages. Plus, they allow you to organize your camping gear in a way that makes the most sense for you.

2. Foam Floor Tiles

These are indispensable. No one ever imagines how sitting on the hard ground for any amount of time will cut into your enjoyment of the scenery and experience. However, it can, especially with young children. Also, they add a layer of insulation inside your tent that, while the weather is warm, isn’t noticed. However, you would feel it without them if the ground gets cold. Plus, the interlinking design means you can have several to take over by the fire or on short trips.

3. Car Camping

In some cases, sleeping in a tent on the ground isn’t doable. There can be a variety of reasons for this, but the fact is that there are a couple of options. For serious campers, an RV may be an option. For others who camp once or twice a year, the investment doesn’t pan out. Another option, significantly less expensive in the long run is car camping. This can be done a variety of ways, such as rooftop tents. These are made with rip-resistant nylon and set up on a platform on top of your car. This means that you can still have all the storage space in your vehicle and also set up a tent in less than sixty seconds, allowing you and your family to enjoy the great outdoors.

4. Rainy Days Will Happen

A little rain can be kept off with a poncho and won’t prevent you from your usual activities. However, a more substantial downpour can really dampen spirits and fray tempers. Have an array of rainy-time activities ready, so the littles can be occupied until the rain slackens. These can be as simple as examining pictures you took while on the trail, telling stories that center on the camping experience, or playing a game to pass the time. However, have something to take their minds off of being stuck in camp.

5. Planning for Food

While adults may go for long periods of time without eating, it’s true that many youngsters won’t. Making fresh crudité for the littles is as easy as cutting up carrots, celery, and other veggies and keeping them within easy reach in plastic baggies. Plan your meals and make sure you have the proper utensils to cook them while camping, and ensure that you have a place to keep things cold—meat, dairy, and eggs. You might also start a tradition of eating unusual things while camping that you don’t normally eat in order to allow young palates to expand. Whatever you decide, it’s important that you plan ahead and make sure that you have everything you and your young ones will need.

Conclusion

Camping as a family can provide wonderful memories. No matter how you do it, you’re sure to have a wonderful experience. But there are great trips and then there are the ones that are unforgettable, which you and your children will remember for a lifetime.
