Tips on Fire Safety and Prevention

The damage and destruction which result from a fire need to be controlled by a set of practices. This is called fire safety. To prevent the flames from spreading and developing, one needs to follow certain rules that prevent any mishap caused by an uncontrollable fire. When a building is being constructed or even after it is already built, fire safety measures are implemented, and all the residents are taught some basic tips.

Fire Safety

Fire hazards are threats to safety and they increase the likeliness of a disaster. Ignorance may also hinder a person from escaping in case he gets trapped in such an event. Fire prevention is a great component of building safety. Fire prevention officers are the ones that go to educational institutions to educate others about the same and they also inspect buildings. The chief of this department trains newcomers and makes presentations and inspections as well.

Amongst all the causes of a fire, cooking stands third in place. Older people are usually the victims of injuries caused in such scenarios. Here are some characteristics of fire that you need to understand before you move on to the tips:

  • Darkness – When a fire breaks out, it emits gases that can make any person feel drowsy and dizzy. You may even fall deeper into sleep instead of staying awake
  • Heat – The smoke and heat released by fire can sear up your lungs and can be even more dangerous than the flames themselves.
  • It spreads very quickly – Within five minutes, an entire residence can be caught up within the flames. It takes just two minutes for a fire to become life threatening.

Fire prevention tips:

Safety While Cooking

  • Cooking should never be left unattended
  • The range of an oven should never be used to heat a home
  • All the inflammable items like curtains and towels should be kept away from flames at all times
  • While cooking, it is advised that you wear tight or short sleeves

Why You Should Install Smoke detectors

  • One’s chances of losing his/her life in a fire reduces by half if smoke detectors are installed
  • Smoke alarms should be installed everywhere in your house
  • You should keep your smoke alarms in proper condition and make sure they are working. For this, change their batteries once in a year, replace the detectors every 10 years and clean them every month

Electric wiring

  • Overload of extension cords or on the fuse can result in a fire
  • Wiring should never be under the carpet or over the nails
  • Extension cords need to check for loose plug-ins or damaged wires
  • Outlets need to be covered always

Heating Source

  • Only the designated fuel should be used for the heater
  • The heaters should be placed away from inflammable items

Smoking, Lighters and Matchsticks

  • Smoking should never be done while in bed or when you are on any kind of drugs (medication) or when you feel drowsy
  • Smoking should be done responsibly and the lighters or any other inflammable items should be kept away from the reach of children

Escaping a Fire

  • You should always make or come up with an escape plan
  • Windows should stay open or should be easy to open in case any mishap happens. Never nail or paint them shut
  • When escaping a fire, you should always stay close to the ground; the air is cleaner there
Fire Safety

These were a few points to be noted while discussing about fire safety. Make sure that each member of your family is taught about fire these steps. As I have pointed out earlier, your safety is in your own hands and every individual, especially adults, should be smart enough to handle these situations properly.
