True Road Crusaders: 5 Struggles Every Bicyclist Understands

A bicycle is a wonderful means of transportation–especially if you live in a busy city! Not only does it eliminate your carbon footprint, it provides hours of physical activity for those who do it regularly. But being an avid road crusader doesn’t come without its setbacks. Here are 5 you may find all too familiar…

Cars

You know you’re a true cyclist if you’ve been honked at, crowded, cut off, and maybe even yelled at. Motorists and cyclists are like cats and dogs on the road. Some urban areas aren’t very bike friendly and force you to share the lane with cars. This irritates some drivers beyond reason and can lead to heated interaction. Remember to be courteous of vehicles. Not only because it’s the polite thing to do, but also because they’re bigger than you.

Flat Tires

A flat tire is bad. A flat tire in the middle of nowhere is worse. Unlike cars, you’re at the mercy of Mother Nature until you fix the flat. Every expert rider knows never to leave home without a supply of extra tubes and a tire repair kit. But chances are, you’ve probably left home without supplies before and know exactly what it’s like to be stranded more than once in your life.

Road Conditions

Riding along a rough road in heavy traffic can be a white-knuckle experience. Rocks, potholes, and sand are all dangerous obstacles to overcome, and the danger is augmented at higher speeds. If you see the road you’re on is littered with debris, it’s probably a good idea to slow down, get off your bike, and walk it until the path clears up. You likely to this day have your mom’s words of warning stuck in your head, “always wear your helmet!”

If you’re an avid bike rider, chances are you have the proper cyclewear designed to protect you from falls and road rash. You may even lovingly refer to them as your stretchy pants.

Riding At Night

Riding at night brings its own set of unique challenges. Motorists have a hard time seeing you, even with lights and reflective gear. Unless your bike is your only means of transportation, avoid riding after the sun has set. If you haven’t already, consider installing a headlight or rear blinkers that rely on LED power to ensure your rides are as safe as possible.

You Lack Wardrobe Creativity

Avid bike riders have the gear to go with their obsession. It’s hard to pass up on discounted deals and new releases, so it’s likely your closet is packed with bike attire from places like DHDWear. Remember, you can never have one too many shirts stating your loyalty and love for biking. Don’t let anybody tell you enough is enough.

As a bicyclist, you get to view the world from a completely different perspective than most. Whether you prefer riding alone or with others, it allows you the chance to connect with your surroundings in a way that can’t be duplicated. Even with its struggles, being a bicyclist is something you wouldn’t trade for the world. (Or for a car.)
