If you’re an avid motorcyclist, you may want to get out for a few long rides before winter arrives. As the temps drop, it’s essential to make sure you have all the right gear for a fall weather adventure.
Want to stay warm and safe on your motorcycle? Here’s some “must have” and useful gear to have the next time you hop on your motorcycle.
A Flip-Up Helmet
Most motorcyclists know that helmets are essential for safety and can reduce your risk of traumatic brain injuries. Even if you live in a state where motorcycle helmets aren’t required by law, wearing a helmet can be the one piece of motorcycle gear that protects you the most.
A helmet that has a flip up face cover is a great option for colder weather riding; it still provides adequate air flow but protects your neck and face from the cold air. Want to be even more visible while riding on the road? Choose a helmet that is brightly colored.
Neck Gaiter
Scarves and bulky accessories can be uncomfortable underneath a helmet. A high-quality neck gaiter, such as one made of wool, can wick away moisture and keep you warm; most are thin enough to wear comfortably with a helmet.
Some neck gaiters may be long enough to cover your ears and even part of your head with out interfering with your vision. Don’t forget to keep your head warm.
Wear Layers
Investing in a good pair of thermal clothing (such as a shirt and pants) can keep you warm and dry under your regular clothes without getting overheated. Wool thermal wear is likely to keep you a little warmer and drier than cotton.
Wearing layers, don’t forget to wear warm and long socks that are designed to wick away moisture, particularly during a long ride.
Consider A Riding Suit
You might have a lightweight rain suit for warmer months, but an all-weather riding suit is important to consider if you’re planning on riding in colder weather. Look for a full-body riding suit that fits comfortable over your regular clothes, but not too loose that it may interfere with how well you operate your motorcycle.
If you don’t want to invest in a full-body riding suit, a pair of cold weather rated pants and jacket are definitely an important investment as soon as the temps drop.
Boots and Gloves
Boots and gloves are essential for riding all year round, but if you already own a pair of either one they might not be warm enough for colder weather. Make sure to find a pair of boots with good tread and ankle support.
There are plenty of great motorcycle gloves on the market, but if you’re willing to spend a little more money, consider heated gloves like these.
Safety Vest
A helmet is essential in protecting you in a motorcycle accident, but if you plan to ride through many cold seasons (or even year-round), you may want to consider an airbag safety vest.
