Waxing v/s Laser v/s Shaving: Why waxing wins

Waxing is the best hair removal method as compared to shaving and laser hair removal. Surprised? Read on to know more.

It takes a lot of effort to look good, doesn’t it? You have to maintain the health of your skin, keep it clean and infection-free, use the best make-up products, and more to the point, remove unwanted body hair the moment you see it. But your entire beauty regimen is no match for the chore that is removing body hair! It is a constant irritant that is a lifelong companion for most people. Every time they remove body hair, it seems like it grows quickly back without a pause!

And so, in the quest for permanently hair-free skin, many people today opt for laser hair removal methods. Laser hair removal results in the hair being removed for much longer periods of time. At least five sessions are needed to permanently destroy the hair follicles so that the skin is free of hair all one’s life.

While laser hair removal is administered by a dermatologist or skin technician, it is a long winded process that requires constant care and attention post the treatment. The skin is liable to get burnt easily, so sun exposure is a strict no. Besides, the skin might be raw for a few days after the treatment, and it heals quite slowly.

Meanwhile, most women opt to shave off their body hair. This is the quickest hair removal method. However, the hair grows back in just a couple of days, and the stubble is often prickly to the touch. Plus, there is a possibility of nicking the skin, resulting in bleeding and infections. Even more importantly, the razor blades strip the skin’s moisture and essential oils, leaving it dry and scaly. And after all this, the hair grows back very quickly – after which point, you have to shave all over again!

Hence, in the debate between which is superior, laser hair removal or shaving, which would you choose? If you ask us, we would answer: ‘Waxing’.

Why waxing?

Waxing is the process of applying fluid wax (hot or cold) on the skin and pulling off the hair from the roots. The wax may be removed from a tin and heated, before being applied on the skin using a spatula. A cloth strip is then applied on the wax, smoothed over and pulled against the direction of hair. Some women prefer Oriental waxing, in which an elastic blob of wax is used and reused on the skin till all the hair is removed.

Or cold wax strips may be used, in which strips are pre-coated with wax. The strips are applied on the skin and pulled, removing the hair quickly.

Waxing is a safer method than laser hair removal, because there is no pre- and post-treatment recovery time needed. Plus, since the hair is pulled from the roots, it grows back much slower and the regrowth is finer. This is a much superior outcome than shaving, in which the skin becomes dry, the hair growth is rough and there is a chance of injury.

The best waxing products come to you courtesy of Veet, whose wax strips are formulated for different skin types and have a mild fragrance. They can be used on the arms, legs, underarms and bikini area. Plus, the strips are fortified with skin-soothing ingredients that hydrate the skin on application. Thus, the skin’s pH levels are maintained, it does not lose its moisture and the hair comes away harmlessly.

Veet’s wax strips for normal skin contain soothing lotus milk and jasmine. The strips for dry skin contain hydrating Shea butter and have a pleasing lily fragrance. Meanwhile, the sensitive skin strips are fortified with soothing Aloe Vera and skin-boosting Vitamin E.

How to use Veet wax strips:

  • The day before using the wax strips, exfoliate the skin using skin scrub or a gentle loofah. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and opens up the pores, thus leading to effective hair removal.
  • Ensure the skin is clean and dry before applying the strips.
  • Take a strip and rub it between the palms of your hands to warm the wax. Now remove the plastic covering and apply the waxed side of the strip on the skin. Smooth it over with a firm hand.
  • Grip the pull tab and pull off the strip against the direction of hair. You may use the same strip at least two more times, or till its adhesion wears off.
  • You can also cut the strips to a smaller piece before taking off the plastic covering. These smaller pieces can be used in the bikini line and underarms.
  • Clean the skin using the wipes provided in the box.
