What should you consider when building a wetroom?

If the time has come to renovate your current bathroom or perhaps you want to add an extra bathroom in the spare room that you never use, choosing a wetroom is an ever increasingly popular choice – whether for young families or aging parents. However, there are many things to consider before taking the plunge. Read on to discover our great pointers on wetrooms, to make sure you make the right choice for you.

Utilising the space

The first thing to think about when designing your new wetroom is the space you are working with. Even in a small area you can do a few simple things that will make the space feel bigger and less cluttered. For example, choosing a wall hanging toilet and sink, rather than the traditional pedestal option, will mean you’ll see more floor space, thus giving the impression of a larger area.

Choosing the right tile

One of the main features of a wetroom will be the tiles. Ceramic wall tiles and floor tiles will obviously create the perfect waterproofing required for a wetroom, but also getting the right colour, size and shape is just as important to create a flawless look. A good way to achieve this is to use matching wall and floor tiles throughout, leaving you with a lovely clean and simple finish. Porcelain tiles also make a perfect choice for wetrooms, as most designs are suitable for use on walls and floors, allowing you to use the same tile throughout.

Keeping it dry

It may be stating the obvious, but wetrooms get very wet.  There are, however, a few ways you can limit the amount of standing water there will be and the time it will be left standing. One way to do this is by installing electric under floor heating – not only will it be lovely and warm underfoot on those cold winter mornings, but it will also ensure surface water disappears quicker. Another tip is to install a partial shower screen that will limit where the water will go.

Lighting

The lighting in a wetroom can often be overlooked until the end of the job. However, it’s well worth the effort to consider all options before you start the project to maximise the lighting effects in your space. You can use various different types of lighting to create the perfect ambiance for your room – from spot lights to fancy wall lights. With small and dark rooms, you may also want to consider installing additional lighting to make it feel brighter and airier. After all, you won’t want to feel cramped and enclosed – the right lighting can avoids this even in the smallest of rooms.

A wetroom is a wonderful, easy to clean and maintain option for a bathroom; and by following a few simple steps you can create a beautiful and relaxing environment to enjoy a long and relaxing shower after a hard day. Whatever your reasons for wanting a wet room, be it mobility issues or ease of use, you’re sure to love it once it’s installed!
