People looking for ideas on how to decorate a small bedroom
Decorating a small living room or a tight dining room is a challenge for many people, but decorating a small bedroom might be the trickiest of all.
After all, you have to have a bed, and the bed alone can take up a lot of space.
But it CAN be done!
If you know the right tips and tricks, you can make a small bedroom look bigger and maximize space.
Ready to get started? Here’s our step-by-step guide to redecorating a tiny bedroom.
1. Keep it light and bright
Color plays a huge role in how you perceive the size of a room. To make your room look bigger than it is, keep the colors light and bright.
Paint the walls and ceiling in light colors. Ditch the blinds or drapes in favor of sheers so you can let the natural light pour in from outside.
Keeping a monochromatic color scheme also works well in a small space. You don’t have to go to the extreme and make everything white, but you should pick two colors that work together and stick to them throughout the room.
Using various colors can pull your focus in different directions, which draws attention to how small space actually is.
If your property manager doesn’t allow permanent changes, try peel and stick wallpaper or a fabric wall instead.
2. Pick the right bed
Unfortunately, if you have a tiny bedroom, you’ll probably have to forgo the king or queen bed. But that doesn’t mean your only other option is a twin.
Unless your room is incredibly narrow, a full-size bed is a great option. If the room can’t fit a full-size bed, consider buying a daybed or a lofted bed instead. With a loft bed, you can make use of the height of the room and also create space underneath where you can place a dresser or desk.
And while the size of the mattress is important, the design of the bed itself also makes a big difference. Opt for smaller headboards, lower bed frames, or streamlined beds so that the bed frame doesn’t take up any excess space.
3. Install floating shelves
Floating shelves are a great way to add storage space without having to add extra furniture and take up valuable floor space. You can stagger them around the room, hang them in rows to display books and decorative items or hang one or two to hold storage bins.
You can even use floating shelves in place of nightstands. If there’s not enough room to place nightstands on either side of your bed, consider hanging floating shelves instead. This creates a cool, contemporary look and keeps items off the floor so the room won’t look too cluttered.
4. Add a large mirror
When it comes to decorating with mirrors, there’s one trick to keep in mind:
The smaller the room, the bigger the mirror should be.
Mirrors instantly make a small space appear bigger, and the larger the mirror, the more of an illusion it will create. If you have limited floor space, try hanging a few large mirrors in a geometric group on one wall. If you have some floor space to spare, prop a large rectangular mirror up against the wall.
If you can position it in a way that reflects the windows, your room will look even bigger!
5. Hang your lighting
Ditch the end tables and traditional table lamps in favor of a few hanging pendants. Hanging lighting from the ceiling eliminates the need for table lamps and the tables needed to hold them. And in a small room, the fewer items you have, the better.
You can also replace your side table lamps with sconces. Mount one small sconce on either side of your bed or slightly above the bed. This is a great way to maximize space and give your tiny bedroom a chic, modern look.
6. Invest in multipurpose furniture
In a small space, storage is often the biggest issue. To maximize space and create more storage, choose furniture that has multiple purposes.
For example, if you want to have a nightstand, look for one with drawers or a bottom shelf where you can store personal items. Or, look for one that’s taller and open on the bottom that can double as a desk for your laptop.
The more uses a piece of furniture has, the more value it will have—especially in a tiny room.
7. Make use of vertical space
The smaller your bedroom, the more important it is to make use of vertical space. We already talked about hanging floating shelves to create high storage, but vertical space doesn’t have to be functional. It can also be used to create the illusion of a larger room.
By hanging artwork high on the walls or hanging a curtain rod high above the window (almost at the ceiling) you can draw the eye upward. The taller the room looks, the bigger it will appear, and that can make a real difference in a tiny space.
8. Add textures and pattern
The trick to decorating a tiny bedroom is to take the focus off the size of the room and put it on other things.
Textures and patterns are a great way to do that.
- Add pattern by wallpapering the wall behind your bed.
- Add texture by covering the bed in soft, high-quality linens and blankets.
- Add pattern and texture by rolling out an area rug.
Creating a focal point in one area of the room is a great way to detract from its obviously small size!
9. Keep the furniture to a minimum
The less space you have, the less furniture you’ll be able to fit.
So get back to basics and start with the things you can’t live without — a bed and some sort of side table.
When it comes time to store and organize clothing, streamline your closet and keep it clutter-free. If you can store all of your clothing in your closet, you may not even need a dresser or bureau.
If you’re ready to make your tiny bedroom look and feel bigger, follow these tips:
- Keep it light and bright.
- Pick a streamlined bed.
- Make use of vertical space and hang artwork or mount floating shelves.
- Add a mirror to create the illusion of a bigger space.
- Keep the furniture to a minimum, using multipurpose furniture wherever possible.
Before you know it, your tiny little bedroom won’t look (or feel) quite so small!
