In the world of fine arts and crafts, the importance of decoration can never be underestimated. It is often said that no good work is complete without it. Decoration adds depth to the work, creates interest and makes it more appealing. As a matter of fact, many artists consider decoration as an essential part of the creation process, which starts with sketching and includes drawing, painting and finally the most important element, which are decorative items.
It is true that we can say that the artwork is made of many things but one of the most essential elements is ‘decoration.’ This is what helps us to see form in objects and makes them come alive on the canvas. Artistic decoration has evolved and gone through different stages, from the caveman days to the modern age. We can find a lot of decorations in nature and in artworks.
When it comes to interior design however, we cannot deny the importance of decoration. However, we should not mistake interior design for stage decoration. Interior design can never reach the height of stage decoration. Interior design as such will only aspire to show off certain decorations or objects inside the home.
As a matter of fact, it is true that there are certain differences between decoration and adornment. While one is used to show off the objects while the other is used to decorate and adorn the objects, the two terms do mean the same thing. There are also instances when the terms overlap. For example, a picture may be used to adorn something and at the same time used as a decoration.
Now, let us go back to the topic. The difference between decoration and adornment is actually their sources. The source of the latter is the artistic creativity, whereas the source of the former is actually the artistic skills. Now, if we look at interior decoration then we will see how important the skill of the craftsman really is.
We can take a look at the Chinese culture for a good example. For the Chinese people, beauty is associated with the things that can be seen from a distance. This means that the decorative works they produce are mostly of the same size.
Now, if we look at le Corbusier, he was always very particular about how a decoration would appeal to the eye. He used a very large number of decorative works to beautify the interiors of the Louvre. Also, he always used fine materials like gold and silver. These are just some of the examples of decoration that we can learn from le Corbusier.
Interior design is a way to show off certain decorations while adorning and beautifying the entire place. This is why the importance of decoration has been understood throughout history. It doesn’t matter whether you like modern or antique decoration style, it is very much necessary that we learn to appreciate the decorative arts.
Decoration is actually seen not only as an art but as an expression of people’s creative impulse that is born out of their artistic bent of mind. And, as we know too much about technology, computer and animation, it may seem that decoration is just one of those things that will get replaced by these wonderful entertainment tools in the near future. The importance of decoration is however not something that can be done away with. It is something that we should be able to enjoy even when there is no more need to use these things.
There are different kinds of decoration. For example, the Chinese decoration style uses a great amount of gold and silver and I can say that this is their basic decoration style. But, this can never be the case with other cultures because in their culture, beauty is not just about using beautiful objects.
In the Chinese culture, for example, the women are treated very nicely. They are appreciated and respected for who they are. Also, it is very important for women to look good because that plays a very important role in the social life of women. That is why, it is very rare to see a woman seated behind the stove cooking. This is because, she must look perfect in order to be attractive to other people. Another reason is that, this kind of decoration style is more appreciated by people, thus, becomes a necessity and people feel obliged to learn it.
When people come to know about such traditional Chinese decoration style, they feel very happy. This is because, it gives them a clear picture about how beautiful and nice they are. In the same way, it reminds them of the great feeling of having been appreciated. Therefore, for every person who has a dream to become a good decorative artist or tries to learn this art, it is important that he should understand the importance of decoration. It is very simple to learn this skill but difficult to master. Therefore, learning this art is must for every human being.
