Moving for Work? How to Save Yourself Time, Stress, and Money

You’ve just been offered a job in a new city. You’re excited about the opportunity and new surroundings to look forward to. Then, you realize this means you’ll have to deal with moving and all of its associated problems. These are tips to save yourself time, stress, and money when moving for work.

Downsize

You don’t need to move everything to your new home. It’s costlier, takes longer, and it’s not really worth it. When packing things for moving, you should be deciding what can be donated or tossed entirely. Things like your bed and dresser should obviously be moved, but there might be clothing that you never wear or books that you never read. It can be hard to say goodbye, but it’s often a worthwhile decision.

Find a Moving Company

You might’ve been able to move with a single truck when moving across town to a new apartment, but you’ll want to get actual movers for this job. Look for companies that provide the highest-quality long-distance services. Depending on how soon you need to start your new job, you might not have a lot of wiggle room to book a company early. Call as many as you can as early as you can. Work with them to negotiate the most reasonable rate possible. Moving to another city can be expensive, but you can find ways to reduce the costs.

Find Free Boxes

Who would’ve guessed cardboard boxes could cost so much? You can certainly find them available for purchase, but they’ll take a significant bite out of your moving budget. Thankfully, you can find them for free easily. There’s likely at least a few lying around your house. You can also ask your friends if they have any available. Your local grocery store likely has cardboard boxes they’d be happy to part with. If you don’t have any luck finding free boxes, many moving companies offer the ability to sell back unused boxes that you buy from them. You’ll still have to buy some boxes in this case, but you can at least save money by getting refunded for any boxes you didn’t need. Remember to keep the boxes you do use in storage if you can for your next move.

Start Early

When you put things off, you deal with the stress that comes from procrastination. There’s hardly any task that you can start too early. Even taking ten minutes for initial moving preparations can make a difference. By the time it comes to move, you’ll be proud of yourself for taking action early. Additionally, you should consider whether you might move as far as a couple of years in the future. If you think you might move, keep that in mind when you decide what you store and how you store it, as well as when you are thinking about major purchases. A well curated storage system and limited extraneous purchases can help to make moving easier in the future.

Moving for work can be a hassle, but it doesn’t have to be as hard as we make it. You need to just make sure you have a dependable moving company, get yourself organized, and make good use of your time. With these tips, your moving experience can be as smooth as possible.
