Preventive Pest Control Measures to Take During Winter

When the weather starts to get colder, it is important to do what it takes to prevent pests from taking shelter inside of your home. Many pests are looking for a warm place to stay, but you can keep your home safe by making sure that they are not attracted to your space. From being prepared and taking preventive measures to considering pest control services, there are a ton of different options available to you.

Look for Cracks

The first step is to walk around your home and make sure that there are no easy ways for pests to get in. Check around where your pipes enter your home and seal off any problem areas. You should also make sure that your doors and windows are sealed properly too. Even the smallest cracks in your home’s foundation can be an entrance for pests. Make sure they are sealed and even consider having someone inspect it if you live in an older home.

Store Firewood

There is nothing like a warm fire during the winter season, but firewood that is kept too close to your home can attract pests like termites, ants, or mice. Be sure to store your firewood away from your residence so that pests are not attracted to it. Keeping it covered and free from outside pests will also help. Use a large tarp and some bungee cords or keep your firewood in an outdoor shed.

Check for Leaks

Pests are often attracted to wet or damp areas. If you have a leak, be sure to get it fixed fast so that pests are not attracted to the moisture. You should also dry up any wet areas around your home as fast as possible. If you are noticing pests that are seemingly coming from nowhere, first check for leaks in your pipes. It can be the root cause of a gnat infestation.

Trim Trees

In the winter, pests like squirrels and raccoons might be interested in finding an entryway into your residence to stay warm and dry. It is important to keep them out if possible. You should watch out for overgrown tree branches and make sure that any that are too close to your roof are pruned back. You do not want to give pests easy access to your home through your attic or chimney.

Secure Your Trash

If you have an outdoor garbage can, you should be sure to have an animal-proof lid, or you should keep it in a storage shed away from your primary residence. Racoons and other pests are going to be drawn to the smell of garbage, so do what it takes to keep them away from yours.

Professional pest control services can be a good idea if you want to be confident that your home is pest-free. You can hire one to help with preventative tactics so that you can have peace of mind this winter. Although pests are looking for a way to get in, you can keep them out with the right safety measures. Be prepared, and enjoy a pest-free winter.
