College students go to school thinking that they will always be safe, just like they were back at home. While colleges do boast about how safe and secure their campuses are, you should know that this is not always the case. While the college security can do their best, they cannot be everywhere at all times, so you will need to learn to be responsible for yourself. There are many ways that you can do it, and you just need to know how.
The first thing you should know about being safe on a college campus is to always stay with your friends or with a group of other people, especially at night. Don’t ever be caught by yourself, because if you are, you could face great danger. Being in a group is far safer. Don’t go out late at night either, because many creepy people lurk at night, and if you are a pretty, young girl, you will be more of a target. If you do for some reason have to be out late at night and there is a change you may be alone, you should carry a can of pepper spray in your purse. Be sure to keep away from strangers. Additionally, make sure that you always have your keys, and if you should lose them, report it immediately. Never let anyone that you do not know into the residence halls because this too could be dangerous. If someone is stalking you on campus, do not hesitate to call the police or campus security immediately. Finally, you should know that if you go off campus to a party, campus security is no longer responsible. You should not take drinks, cigarettes or anything else from anyone you don’t know. You should never depend on getting a ride from someone you don’t know either. Many campuses offer transportation for their students, so you should take advantage of it. Even if you need to go somewhere that the college transportation goes, you could always call a cab or ride with a friend.
No matter where you go to school, you will notice that campus security brags about how safe the campus is. You should always remember that this is not always the case. The campus security can only do so much to protect the students at the college or university that you attend. You need to know how to keep yourself safe, because after all, your safety is partially your responsibility as well. Make sure that you are never caught alone at night. Stay with friends, and do not go out late at night if you don’t have to. Ladies, always remember to keep a can of pepper spray in your purse in case of danger and always have your cell phone handy in case you need to call police in an emergency situation.
