If you are ready to make some decorating changes but are not ready for any big alterations, you can still personalize your space to celebrate you and yours. You can also set up spaces where you can add a special message for your loved ones.

Create a Family Map

If you have a blank wall that needs something, you can create a family map featuring everyone in the house. Consider using custom metal prints at the center and creating a hub and spoke pattern. For example, your wedding photo could be at the center, and you can create radiating patterns of your family as it grows. If you have pets, put up your favorite puppy pic in the middle, then build up photos of your pets as they get bigger.

These walls can be quite fun and do not have to cost a great deal. Check out local thrift shops and garage sales for unique frames, or visit your local dollar store for something more uniform. A can of spray paint can turn a hodgepodge of frames into a matching collection, or you can stick with black and white for simplicity.

Show Off Your Skills

If you studied painting in school but have let it fall by the wayside, summer is the time to start again. If you have always wanted to take a class on glass blowing or ceramics, this is your year! Learning new skills is more than just a hobby. It is actually quite good for your brain to make the effort to learn a new skill. You do not have to be a world class artist to create something unique that will beautify your home. You just have to have the confidence to show it off.

If you are not inspired to work on your artistic skills, consider improving your carpentry skills. Add a set of built in bookcases around a doorway or along a wall. If you have painted trim in your home, paint this bookcase to match, or use plain white or black bookcases and add trim around the bottom. Once it is in place, consider painting the back wall of the shelves in different shades for variety.

Display Your Favorite Things

Now that you have a built-in bookcase, it is time to show off your collection. Anything from art glass to antique toys can be shown off to great effect. Of course, you can also pair your favorite collectibles with your favorite books and build a joyful space to show off all your interests.

Consider adding lights to your display case. Simple options, such as battery powered push lights can work for books, or you can add color changing LEDs that run on batteries to the bottom of your shelves. Many of these lights will need to be screwed in place, so if you do not already own a drill, your new bookcase will give you an excuse to buy one.

Make a Chalkboard Wall

If you have little ones who love to create, consider adding wainscoting to their space, or creating one chalkboard wall that is theirs. Hang a plastic bin from a hook and load it with chalk in all colors that they can use to create. If the playroom is carpeted, you may need to put down a vinyl runner along this wall. Chalk dust can cause damage over time. Additionally, you will need to make erasing part of your daily routine for the next bout of creativity.

You can also add chalkboard paint to a wall in your kitchen. This tool can actually be quite useful. For example, if someone notices that you are low on something in the cupboard or refrigerator, they can write it on the wall. By the end of the week, you will have your grocery list and can just snap a photo before you head to the store!

Conclusion

Small changes in your home can make a huge difference in your enjoyment of the space. Consider putting your favorite photos to use in new ways. Invest in some chalkboard paint or new bookcases to change up your storage options. No matter what you choose to do, personalizing your space will make your home a more joyful place to be.
