Does Drinking Water Affect Fat Loss?

Does drinking water affect fat loss, why do we need to drink so much water, how much should we actually drink and how can we drink more water? All of these questions have been asked by clients in the past few weeks therefore I thought it was high time I wrote an article about drinking water.

Why We Need To Drink Water?

Every system in our body depends on water. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs and carries nutrients to our cells. The process of burning calories requires an adequate supply of water in order to function efficiently; dehydration slows down the fat burning process. Our metabolism does not work as efficiently when we are dehydrated, our metabolism works more efficiently when we are hydrated. Burning calories creates toxins and water plays a vital role in flushing the toxins out of our body.

Water helps maintain muscle tone by assisting muscles in their ability to contract, and it lubricates our joints, hence good hydration can help reduce joint and muscle soreness when we are exercising. Our healthy diet includes a good amount of fiber which is helpful to our digestive system, and keeps us feeling fuller for longer, however without adequate fluids it can cause constipation instead of helping to eliminate it. It is important to know that it is often difficult to tell the difference between feelings of hunger and feelings of thirst. Sometimes that gnawing feeling can be caused by dehydration. It is a good idea to reach for a glass of water rather than automatically going for a snack.

How Water Much Should We Drink?

There are many factors that influence the answer to this question, including our health, how often and how intensely we exercise, the climate we live in and if you are pregnant or breast feeding. I’m sure you have heard the 8 x 8 recommendation, which is to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, this equates to about 2 liters. This is adequate for the average healthy person. On the days that we exercise we will need an extra couple of glasses, more if the activity is intense and we sweat a lot. All beverages will help to keep us hydrated however if we are striving to achieve fat loss, or are focused on a healthy lifestyle, water is our best source of hydration.

Tips for Drinking More Water
