How to Swaddle Your Baby Safely for Sleep

Hi! Welcome to the site, if you’re new. Congratulations to all of you who are expecting your first mini, adding to your family and need a short refresher, or your baby is going to have a baby and you want to re-learn well how help!

Whatever the situation may be, we realise how stressful it can be when a mini arrives. Our aim is to take you through the swaddling procedure and answer any questions you may have. We’ve all been there, and as many of us are mothers, we want to make sure you feel supported as you begin on this baby sleep journey.

What exactly is swaddling, and why should you do it?

Swaddling your child in a cocoon to make them feel safe and comfortable is an ancient technique. We swaddle our children to prevent them from waking up suddenly swinging their arms and heads, destroying all of our hard work in getting them to sleep. The Moro, or startle reaction, is the flailing movement. Some babies experience a jerk in their bodies every 20 minutes or so. It starts in the first month of pregnancy and is entirely natural. The reaction can be triggered by a loud noise, a sudden bright light, movement, or even a parent laughing. This jerking motion is calmed by swaddling, which keeps your child comfortable and satisfied.

For children who have grown accustomed to their mother’s reassuring warmth and activity, the transition from the womb to life outside can be difficult. As their body grows rapidly, their brain develops, and they establish a circadian rhythm, your child will usually sleep for roughly 16 hours a day in the first few months, which is sometimes referred to as the ‘fourth trimester.’ By providing protection and familiarity, a swaddle can help your infant acclimate to the outside world. If your child becomes overstimulated by their surroundings, it can assist to calm them down.

Is swaddling suitable for all children?

All babies are unique in its own way. Some people prefer to sleep in a womb-like atmosphere, while the others prefer the freedom of sleeping with their arms out, and still others don’t like being swaddled at all. We suggest using our Cocoon Swaddle Bag as a sleeping bag for these newborns, with the arm studs undone. Once they’ve reached the age of three months, you can try one of our infant sleeping bags, which have a roomier fit for newborns that don’t want to be restricted.

A secure sleeping system is critical, regardless of which pouch you choose:

·       Always put your child to sleep on his or her back at the end of the cot or bassinet.

·       You won’t need any bedding if you choose a Cocoon Swaddle Bag or rain coat for extra warmth.

·       Ensure that the bag is well across the neck and armholes, but not too snug.

·       Their sleeping surface should be hard and flat at all occasions.

·       Nothing else should be inside their mattress. This includes blankets, cot bumpers, pillows, toys, and mobiles that may fall or be within reach.

·       Baby should sleep with his or her face and head uncovered, without even a beanie or bows, and away from a smoking atmosphere.

·       The mattress and base of the cot or bassinet should be safe.

Pouch Swaddles vs. Traditional Swaddle Wraps

A classic wrap wrapper or a pouch are the two types of swaddles (also known as a swaddle bag). Both will make your infant feel safe and will assist in his or her slumber. Please avoid wraps and swaddles that restrict full and free chest expansion. Those small ribs are still supple and bendy, and a too exuberant wrap could result in a chest that is uncomfortably hard.

While the purpose of a swaddle is to prevent the startle reflex from awakening the infant, babies also require some arm movement for future growth of the shoulder joints. Your baby’s arms should not be confined in one place by a swaddle. Make sure to check some room for natural arm movement. To handle this, look for a swaddle with flexibility, like as the Cocoon Swaddle Bag.

Swaddle Wraps (Traditional):

·       Muslin, cotton sleeves, or a thin blanket are common choices.

·       This type of wrap is made to wrap around your baby like a wrap.

·       The arms of newborn infants are wrapped around their chests.

·       In most cases, this style will be exhibited in the hospital after you’ve given birth.

·       This method can be difficult to master, and you may find that your mini has escaped their wrap, causing in many midnight wakefulness.
